The Reverend Chris Leevy Johnson is the husband of Cynthia Richardson Johnson, the father of Leah Denise and Ian Samuel; and the son of Attorney I. S. Leevy and Doris Wright Johnson. Born in Columbia, South Carolina, he is a 1996 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, majoring in Honors American History. While attending the University of North Carolina, he served as a Manager for the Men’s Basketball Team under the legendary Dean Smith and was initiated into Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. After graduating from the University of North Carolina, Christopher attended Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science, graduating with an Associate’s Degree in Mortuary Science. At Gupton-Jones, he served as President of his Class and his class mates awarded him the Bill E. Pierce Award, as the member of the class that most exemplified professionalism in the funeral industry. He has a Master’s Degree in American History as well as a Ph.D. in American History with a concentration in African-American Religion from the University of South Carolina. His dissertation entitled “Undertakings: The Politics of African-American Funeral Directing,” examines the political and social significance of African-American Funeral Directors during the 20th century. He served for ten years as an Adjunct Professor of African-American History in the African-American Studies Program at the University of South Carolina. Currently he is the Life Coach and Chaplain for the University of South Carolina Men’s Basketball Team.
A fourth generation funeral director, he is a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer and is the Managing Director of the Leevy’s Funeral Home. He provides continuing educational seminars on the national, regional, and state level for the National Funeral Directors and Morticians Association.
An ordained Baptist minister, Dr. Leevy Johnson was licensed to preach the gospel at the Brookland Baptist Church in West Columbia, South Carolina, where Reverend Charles B. Jackson, Sr. is the pastor, and ordained by the Gethsemane Baptist Association of the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina. He currently serves as the Campus Pastor of Brookland Baptist Church, Northeast. His community service activities include: Board of Directors for the Brookland Foundation; Board of Directors for the Columbia Community Development Foundation, Board of Directors for the Central Carolina Community Advisors and Board of Advisors for Junior League of Columbia.
