Deacon James Young, Sr., the son of the late James and Sarah Young, was born June 11, 1928, in Newberry, South Carolina. He departed this earthly journey on Thursday, July 29, 2021.
In 1947, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Lovator McCullum, of Columbia South Carolina. From their marriage, 5 children were born, Patricia, James, Richard, Wilbert, and Mary Anne. He was dedicated to the education of his children and those children in the community.
Deacon Young received his GED through the Greater Columbia Literacy Council, in South Carolina. He started his work history at Bradley Elementary School, and had over 20 years of service. He moved on to work for Standard Federal Savings and Loan, where he retired from the Banking Industry, after 25 years of dedicated service.
Mr. Young was baptized and attended Laurel Street Baptist Church, and became a Deacon. From there, he moved his membership to Central Baptist Church. He became a strong active member of New Ebenezer Baptist Church. He served as the President of the Den Mothers and Fathers, served on the Deacon board, where he continued his ministry spreading the word of God.
Deacon Young displayed total dedication and an undaunting commitment to his Church, Community, and Family.
He was preceded in death by: his wife, Lovator McCullum Young; his daughter, Patricia Piper; a son-in-law, Benjamin Piper; and a son, Richard Young.
Deacon James Young, Sr. leaves to mourn his passing: his sons, James C. Young, of Columbia, SC and Wilbert R. (Yvonne M.) Young, of Bellevue, NE; his daughter, Mary Anne Brown, of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, April Foster, Richard Young, Jr., Ta-Nisha Stubblefield, Clint, Jr., Cha-Naise Biddle, Tomika Brown-Yisrael, Wilbert R. (Antoine) Young, Jr., and Morgan Young; great-grandchildren, Dearch, Alysia, Roland, Oliva, Princess-Sarah Yisrael, Aaliyah Culcleasure, Jatavis, Zariah, Antayia, and Trayvon Brown, Antonio Cade, Zamarria, and Aria Foster, Amara Young, of South Carolina, great-great-grandchildren, Zaniyah, Ja’Mya and Antonio Cade, Jr., a host of other loving relatives and friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.
