I have known Mrs. Irene Gibbs all my life. She was one of my mother’s best friends, a friendship forged from the days when Ms. Irene would cut through the path by the house in the 1970s to go see her mother. On each of these journey, Ms. Irene would stop to see my mother and to check on my sister Willia Mae and me whom she loved as her own children. Before her demise, Ms. Irene’s love and care for the two of us extended over the years. Whenever Ms. Irene would see me, her first question was “How is Willia Mae?” When she saw Willia Mae without me. her question was. “How is Byron?” This is just one of the caring attributes Ms. Irene exhibited. Eutawville has certainly lost a wonderful soul, while Heaven has certainly gained another precious angel. To the children, the grandchildren and other relatives, I know it pains you to the core of your hearts to lose such a lovely person in your life. If there be any consolation, rest assure, you will see Ms. Irene again. In That Great Gettin’ Up Morning. My prayers remain with the family.
