There is a huge hole in my heart. I grew up @ 926 Johnson Ave. The entire Brooks family loved Ray and Ida—and they loved us back. Ray and Dad were bonded. We traded vegetables, “help”, fellowship and more. My late brother, Kent, was Ray’s electrician. Ray loved the Lord and his church family. They were the perfect Godly neighbors, who took great pride in their home and raking and manicuring their lawn. Each had their own gentle spirit and they were devoted to caring for each other. Later, Ray kept the home just as Ida did, and never changed her room after she passed. That is where he laid out his Going Home suit, and always kept a small light on thereafter. Ray was the unofficial Neighborhood Crime Watch! He loved to sit on his front porch and had a smile and a wave for everyone who passed. He would sometimes “mentor” unnamed youth with that wave and, “Hey there! —Pull those pants up!!” …and then turn to porch friends and say, “Why would you want to walk around all day and have to hold your pants up!?” — Now, my heart aches; the little white house is empty. Heaven has gained another Angel, and if there’s a party in Heaven, I’m sure there will be lots of Pepsi and sliced peaches with Carnation Evaporated Milk! ~~Philippians 1:3. “I thank my God for every remembrance of you.” ~~ Ray, I will hold you in my heart forever. Johnson Avenue is darker now without your smile.

Deacon Ray Smith was a good person,I remember him from the old Laurel street Baptist church,and when the doors of the New laurel street missionary Baptist church were open he served faithfully until he became ill he will truly be missed.

My dear next door neighbor whom we loved very much. We had been praying for his recovery and returning home. No doubt it was not to be. May the lord as well as his late wife receive him with open arms into heaven. We will miss him greatly here in the earth.
