Mr. David Glenn Strickland, affectionately known as β€œDee” and β€œStrick,” was born in Baltimore, MD, on October 16, 1958.

David was an outstanding football player and proud alumnus of Warwick High School in Newport News, VA. His effectiveness as an offensive lineman resulted in his receiving a full scholarship to Elizabeth City State University (ECSU).Β  The friends made while there became his second family.

David started his professional career in city of Newport News, VA in the Purchasing Department. From there, he went to the Sheriff’s Department, where we worked as a Courtroom Deputy Sheriff.Β  In 1987, he moved to the Juvenile Detention Center. He advanced in the department and held positions including Acting Deputy Director and Nighttime Coordinator of Juvenile Services, which required supervising all secure and less secure services locations in the city of Newport News. He received the Outstanding Supervisor Award on numerous occasions. During his time in Newport News, he also worked for the Department of Juvenile Justice for the State of Virginia as well as the Department of Juvenile Services for the City of Chesapeake. Prior to retirement in 2008, he held the position of Intake Coordinator at the Newport News Department of Juvenile Services.

David was a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated.Β  He was initiated on August 26, 1983 by Alpha Alpha Chapter in Newport News, VA. He transferred to the Omicron Phi Chapter upon relocating to Columbia, SC. Β David participated in local and national community service projects such as the Million Man March in 1995. Β He continued his love of education and ECSU until his passing by providing scholarships for incoming freshman in the School of Education & Business and donating to the 1982 ECSU Alumni Class scholarship. David was present at every ECSU Homecoming and CIAA tournament cheering on the Vikings.

David had a strong faith in God and called Antioch A.M.E. Zion Church in Eastover, SC home from his move to South Carolina until his passing. He was known for his uncanny ability to network and connect with others especially as it relates to the uplifting and well being of young adults and people with hidden talents.Β  David was also a family man who mentored and supported younger family members as well as kids of coworkers and friends to further their education. He was a resourceful person who never met a stranger. He enjoyed researching and learning about antique cars, often called β€œhoopties,” and watching football, especially, his beloved New England Patriots. His jokes, humor, and hearty laugh will be deeply missed.

David peacefully transitioned on Wednesday, June 8, 2022. He was preceded in death by his mother, M. Geneva Strickland; sister, Denise β€œPebbles” Johnson; aunt, I. Evangeline Strickland; and great uncle, Wilbert Strickland, Sr.

  31. To the family of Mr. David Strickland, I am praying for your strength as you prepare to lay to rest David’s earthly body knowing that his eternal soul is with our Father God. I graduated with David from our great school, ECSU. As mentioned in his obituary David was instrumental and active with planning class of 82 40th reunion celebration. I had not seen or spoken to David personally in years but he was one of the people I dearly wanted to see again at the reunion. I remember David’s kindness, his smile and his laughter.
