My most sincere condolences, sympathy, and prayers to the family of Mr. Johnny Cole. 🙏🏿 Like most, I met Cole at his shop on Park- way back in 1978. My hair was slow growing so a BAD haircut would last quite awhile. Some of the guys at Carolina suggested I go to him. Needless to say, as long as I was in the continental US, no one else could cut my hair. Like others have mentioned they did, I would drive hours just to sit in his chair! The conversations between us and others in the shop were educational as well as inspirational. Some Ministers have their Church, Johnny Cole had his Barber Shop. He inspired countless men and women ‘am I right?’…… I considered it an honor and privilege to bring my Nephews the two plus hours drive over the years for their first haircuts, one at the Park and two at the Sumter St location. I would bring fresh seafood from Charleston. Over the years we talked politics, Black History as well as the present state of Blacks, sports, cars, education, women, (yep women – in the positive), entrepreneurship, faith and family. There was nothing off limits. He stood strong on his beliefs – no flipping back and forth to please his customers. He was always full of confidence and positivity, a strong work ethic. He ended each customer’s visit with ‘hey, I appreciate you’. It was not unusual to find him in the shop past midnight. I could go on, however, tears make it difficult to continue….. Mr Cole, I take my hat off to you, figuratively and literally.. I will treasure our conversations and friendship, and for everything you have said and done, it is ME saying I appreciate YOU! I feel like a prolific memory of my childhood has been stripped away with the loss of Johnny Cole. As Johnny cut my hair all through Junior high and high School and fishtails and shags were in. Johnny was a very talented Barber and a good man. I went through some hardship in life and bad times suffering with alcohol and drug addiction. When I got my life back in order I stopped by to talk to Johnny regularly. He always mentored me with words of wisdom and encouragement. And was tickled with the light that I had changed my life for the better. Johnny will be sorely missed.

I remember when I first came to Columbia as a newly hired nurse at Palmetto Baptist (now Prisma), I was in search of a barber in the area and my co-worker told me about Mr. Cole right up the street on Sumter…She also told me he was very old school which was cool with me because that’s my vibe too…I came to his establishment and was very impressed on how clean it was and the demeanor of Mr. Cole…he always was light hearted and able to make anyone laugh….I always appreciated when you left his chair he would say “I’ll see you in 2-3 weeks?…and I appreciate you”. I haven’t been by by his shop in awhile but drove through a few times these past couple of months and didn’t see his truck…expecting the worse I looked him up and brought me to this page…condolences to all family and friends…you will be miss good friend and until we meet again
Met JC when I first moved to town many many years ago. He reminded me of the barbers back home so he made my transition here smooth. No nonsense dude which is what I needed at the time. Well loved and respected in the community and I always admired that. RIP my man and Prayers for the family

Johnny Cole, my brother and dear friend. Let me say that you have and did touch the lives of so many men over the years to include myself. Throughout the years of knowing you, I have learned and experienced a lot and I also felt that you were there for me and others with your valuable words of wisdom and wit (Oh, and may I add only the way Cole would). You had a very unique style about you that made you a man amongst men. I am sure there are thousands of men out there with whom you have mentored to and each having a very interesting Johnny Cole story. Those things made us and those things shaped us into the proud men we are today. And know that some of those things will be forged forward through our offspring. My condolence to Mr Johnny Frank Cole’s family and friends you will be solely missed with friends all over the world and missed in the community as well and all over the Columbia area you were my barber since I was 16 years old my brother Mr Kevin Reese first brought me to your shop and you was my barber ever since I would drive all the way from Charleston South Carolina just to get my haircut I wouldn’t let no one cut my hair other than you Mr.Coles from the first day you cut my hair I never ever had to tell you again how to cut my hair you are a true Master Barber when my brother let me know that you have passed away I was so hurt last time I talked to you before I went to Robinson Illinois to work I always got my haircut before I went out of town to work and I always call you to let you know that I’m coming back in town to get my haircut that I was going to stop by and get my haircut and talk to you buddy and I was reading one remark that says you made us look great now we will always look different now that is so true when I read that I was smiling that shows that I would never have let another barber cut my hair now I would never ever find a barber like you Mr Johnny Frank Cole’s rest in peace until I see you again sleep on my brother,
I pray God continue to strengthen and keep you during this moment and days to come. I met Cole in the late 70s and through the years we’ve always shared knowledge, experiences and laughs. He will be missed by many.

I would like to say that I personally never met Mr. Coles. But his daughter, Brenda, is my friend and coworker. She often spoke of her father in such loving ways. She loved him dearly. And I know he loved her dearly too. I would sometimes hear them speak on the phone with each other. They both would pick and laugh together. And then I went to Mr. Cole’s memorial service. I have never heard so many folks speak so incredibly nice about how a man had touched their lives. Brenda has truly been blessed with having such a wonderful relationship with her Father. And I know she will miss him terribly. But she knows she will meet up again with him in Heaven.❤️ Prayers going up daily for you Ms. Brenda.🙏🏻

Coles was an Amazing Man!!! Not only did he touch the heads of hundreds of thousands of men and women around the World. He educated the minds of everyone that he encountered. Coles never knew a stranger. Because as a Pillar in the Columbia SC, metro area, it was his responsibility to nourish the minds and hearts of his people.

We give our deepest condolences to the Cole’s family. Mr. Johnny Cole was a remarkable man! First, Mr. Cole was our older son Michael Adams’ barber, and later he became our younger son Kevin Adams’ barber. He definitely was a professional and skillful Master Barber. Mr. Cole loved engaging in conversations with his customers about sports, politics, and life in general. Mr. Cole proudly talked about how he was voted twice into the National Who’s Who’s for successful business leaders, and he loved displaying his national awards for the major business accomplishments. Mr. Cole also loved working in his yard and seasonal gardens. However, I personally remembered Mr. Johnny Cole for the kindness and generosity he gave to my beloved mother, aunt, siblings, sons and myself. Mr. Johnny Cole’s kindness, love, and support will always be indebted in our hearts. Mr. Cole was genuine. He sincerely believed in helping others. Our family will always be appreciative of Mr. Johnny Cole’s Barber Shop, and how Mr. Cole welcome each one of us to comfort and safety in his barber shop.
A man of class & distinction Johnny Cole. Cole you will be missed by so many. I truly thank you for every conversation of wisdom you shared and the laughter that brought healing to the soul.

I have fond memories of Mr. Cole since I can remember. He dated my aunt and treated me like a nephew when I was in town. My uncles and I would always go by his shop, and I remember a professional environment and good wholesome conversations about life, music and the black community in general. Mr. Cole was quite the businessman as many know and well know in the community. When I would travel the US, anytime spoke to someone that lived or spent time in Columbia, they all knew of Johnny Cole and his well known barbershop.

I remember your favorite quotes “Do you agree?” I use to laugh so hard when you would get on the guys while waiting on my Dad (Moses) and at times my brothers get their haircut. Fondly Remembering Johnny Coles:
Mrs. Martin(Cosmetology teacher BTWHS)constantly was ask by Miss. Goff and Mrs. Ingram (Home Economics teacher’s) to come get Johnny from lingering outside there classrooms during class periods. Mrs. Martin would go and get Johnny by his earlobe and bring him to her class where he would sit until it was time for him to go to his class. Johnny never became angry or refused. Mrs. Martin was in Johnny’s life for his lifetime. There respect and friendship was genuine. They stayed in touch 50+ years. When Johnny got his first barbershop she was so happy for him. When he moved to Sumter St. her beauty shop was a couple of blocks down on Sumter St. From that time on the teacher and the student stayed in touch. 🙏
My Condolences to the family. I remember going to Mr. Cole’s barbershop back in the 70’s with my mother and brother for him to get a haircut. My mother and Mr. Cole went to school together and new each others family very well. RIP Mr. Cole you will be MISSED.

Coles cut my brother hair for than 20 Years ole Abraham nobody could say nothing to him but Coles, but my Brother got sick and Coles said if something would happen to my Mom he would take care of my brother. I was saddened to learn about the passing of Mr. Johnny Cole. I had heard a lot about Cole’s Barber Shop for years, as he cut several of my cousin’s hair while I went to other great black-owned Columbia barbershops like Joe Irving on Washington Street, Larry at Innervisions on Two Notch Road, and Pressley’s on Farrow Road.
After a while, I decided to give Johnny a try, and he became my barber for the next 10 years. Even after I joined the military and was stationed in Charleston and Norfolk, VA, I would still make the trip to Columbia every two weeks and would always include a haircut in my visits. After I transferred to New Orleans, it was too far to drive every two weeks so my visits to Cole’s became less frequent, but nevertheless, whenever I was in town, I made it my business to stop by and see him.
I recall one Christmas Eve night while I was visiting Columbia, I stopped in at Cole’s for a haircut. It was already after 8pm when I got there, and there were tons of guys waiting on haircuts. After several hours, I finally made it to the chair. It was after 2am when I finally left there, but it was time well spent because the conversations and laughter made the time pass.
I remember another time in 2003 when my family and I were in Columbia while moving from Beaumont, TX to Jacksonville, FL. I stopped by his shop one night to let him see my new son, who was 5-months old at the time. Cole looked at him, then looked at me and said, “that’s a mirror… ’cause he look just like you”. All I could do was laugh.
I haven’t visited Columbia now in over three years, so my wife and I were planning a trip there after Thanksgiving. While there, I had planned on stopping by to see Cole because it had been a long while since I last saw and spoke with him.
I will never forget all the knowledge, wisdom, and laughter that Mr. Cole provided during my visits to his shop.
I extend my sincere condolences to the Cole family.

Johnny was my barber for right at forty years. I could always count on getting a quality cut those many years. My last time there, about a month ago, while waiting to get the last haircut I got from him, we prayed together. I will miss him as many of us in the greater Columbia area will. May God bless his legacy and his family.
Johnny Cole represented the unofficial pulpit for many of us. He demonstrated life lessons and showed many of us what manhood was all about. His sawg, style, passion and work ethic was ahead of its time. He was a visible demonstration to young black men. If I had to discribe Johnny Cole in one word (it would be legendary). Sleep on and take your rest.
To the Cole Family, thank you for this Master Barber Johnny Cole. I pass the shop every day thinking he’s there to fellowship and watch a game. Every time I leave the chair, he would pat me on the back and say (I’ll see you in two weeks). Some Master barbers are hard to replace. Johnny Cole surely is one of them. Came to Columbia in 1979, working with his step-brother John, who told about Cole. He was my barber since 1980. Worked for a short time at the barbershop at night. He always made sure the shop was ready for next day business. Like others I ran errands also. I’m surely going to miss him. Remembering those famous words for all as they headed out “I appreciate you”
To the family of Johnnie Cole my deepest condolences, I would often call Johnnie to make an appointment for my mom brother or myself he would asked me to go by the fish market on Getvais Street to pick up an order of fish he had order mostly beams with the (heads on)at least 12 or more pieces they knew him at the seafood place for years and knew just what he like he will take a break and we enjoyed the fish he always been a person willing to share we laughed and talk about the days spent at Booker T Washington High School my class (67) he and my brother (Cartoon class of 69) talked about football and track which Johnnie ran. He was one of the best barber in the Columbia area his shop was sometimes be open til 1am in the morning he took great pride in his work and daughters and his companion for over 30years he and I talked about her often. At a early age I was inspired by how dignified , and positive he was as a person.
As I aged I was impressed with him as a Black man.He said what he meant, and he meant what he said. I feel blessed to have known him.
I will miss seeing him on my visits from Atlanta to Columbia. Johnny Frank was always my first visit when coming to visit relatives here.
I will fondly remember him as a successful , and talented relative and friend.

I would call Johnny while traveling from Maryland to South Carolina and he would talk and laugh with sko much joy and excitement knowing that I was coming to see him and get my hair cut. Always gave me a sharp cut and I received many compliments.
Also told the people in the shop that he has know me since seventh grade. Johnny lived a life of joy and friendship that showed through his compassion and love for people.

What a loss to the Columbia community. Mr. Coles was the only barber who cut my hair over many years until I decided to go bald.
I remember my last cut with him and he was continually asking me “you sure you want to do this” ( Go Bald).
I would also run errands for him after my cut, mainly to get his quail. He loved quail. I stopped by to see him at the shop one evening about a year ago just to say hello and glad I did.

I met Johnny years ago when I was a freshman in college and he would always asked me, “Do you have everything you need for school?” If I needed anything, he would get it for me because he valued getting an education. I never had the opportunity to meet Johnny Coles, but he was a Legend in the Columbia Beauty and Barber Industry. He will be remembered for days to come for his outstanding performance as a Master Barber and a Great Father to his Sweet Daughter.
To the Cole’s family, my sincere condolences, I’ve known Johnny since we use to cut up in middle school and then high school. Johnny was a good friend, but I have seen how he was if you angered him he did not play. Johnny has been cutting my hair for over 40 years, and later my boys hair. Not within the past few years since I moved out of town and let my hair grow out. But when I was in town I would stop by to speak but Johnny would keep me there for a while talking all the way to the car. I miss him deeply. RIP.
Rest In Peace my friend. Johnny is the reason I am a barber today. And he will never be forgotten… Best barber in the south hands down..

Kenneth McCoy sr coles started cutting my hair when I was about 21 years old and we got to know each other very well and anything I needed for hair or face he would get for me and I would always run errand for him he was very good friend and will be miss now he is in God hand blessing for the family

Johnny Coles started out with his own business as soon as we graduated from BTW. He was a success from the very beginning and his business acumen resulted in him becoming a role model for other young people starting their own businesses.
I always admired his unrivaled knack for letting you know exactly how he felt and his unparalleled confidence.
His first shop on Park and Washington Streets was a mecca for many great conversations and attempts at “solving the problems of the world.” Coles was very opinionated about most topics then and down through the years, and after he moved to Sumter Street, he was still that young Johnny Coles who would speak his mind without apology. It is remarkable how he never aged in the 52 years he was barbering.
He carved out a successful life and had a work ethic like no other. He will certainly rest from his many years of labor. May God grant him the reward that he deserves for his steadfastness, his boldness and his determination.
We want to again extend our sincere condolences and our prayers for my friend and Kaetlynn and Kassidys Auntie Bren during this time of grief. We love you!
I first met Cole when I was 14 years old when he began cutting my hair. Through the years we developed a brotherhood and became best friends. We created countless memories. Spending long nights in the barbershop, riding in his Porsche or helping with his yard. And we all know how particular Cole was about his yard. Cole was one of a kind and a friend you could always count on. Although our time together was cut short I am forever grateful for the time we spent together. Your final words to me were “I appreciate you and love you, Maurice.” I love you too my brother. You will never be forgotten. Rest easy, Cole. Until we met again.
To the Coles Family….. Johnny and I went to BTW together. We’ve always had great conversations. Although I was not a client at his barbershop, I knew that his clientele spread all over Columbia. May God strengthen his family and friends during this time of bereavement. 🙏🏾

Mr Cole were do I start? I haven’t known you as long as some but I was proud to call you our neighbor and friend for the past 5 years. You worked 6 days a week at your business and worked just as hard or even harder on your yard. You have the best looking yard in the neighborhood. It’s definitely a work of art. I’m going to miss our Sunday conversations standing at the fence and the advice and tips you would give us about our lawn and life. You were a blessing to us. As we always said to each other, “You always look out for us, we gonna look out for you. Thank you Mr. Cole. You will be missed and it won’t be the same without you being nextdoor. Mr. Cole cut my hair, and my son’s hair a few times, but have cut my husband’s hair since the 1990’s. Although we live in NC, my husband would insist on a Coke’s haircut when he was in town. His skills were above all others, and I know he will be sorely missed. Continued prayers and thoughts for the healing process for the family and friends of this giant of a man.

Johnny always asked my late father for help on small construction projects at several homes he owned over the years. When I would come home to visit while in college he would give me a free hair cut because of my good grades. He would then send me to pick up his Chinese food for his lunch. Johnny not only you were my Barber for nearly 40 years but my friend even while I live in Atlanta, you were still cutting my hair last month. I remember how proud you were of your Barber National Award in July and our talks and how you always encouraged me. You are a Legend in Columbia in which you touched many lives and will be missed.
