  1. It saddens me to find out the passing of not only Coach George Glymph, but a teacher, mentor and father figure.
My deepest sympathies go out to the Glymph family, Mrs. Glymph, Michael and Tiffani.
My fondest memories was getting a ride home each night in the VW bug and during “certain” games beings asked, “No offense Chuck?” And my reply was, “none taken”.
Peace be with family and friends as George has gone home.

  59. My deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to Betty and the entire Glymph Family! Thank you for sharing Coach with the world! It was your love and support that enabled him to be so free with himself.

I met Coach shortly after I met his sister, Doris, 30 years ago. Doris excitedly took me to Eau Claire to “meet her brother”! As he walked towards us, hearing the students call out to him in the hallway, and his response to them, by name, was so touching. However, it was the big, wide grin and “dancing eyes” that impressed me most! Here is a highly acclaimed and successful Black man, who hasn’t allowed life and living to “steal is joy”! Wow! I became a fan at THAT moment! He greeted me that day and every time we spoke, with “Hey girl, you family!”

That said, what impressed me most about Coach was his love, commitment, and loyalty to family! One of the most endearing memories I have is his and Doris’ personal greeting: he’d start “Hey girl!” and she’d reply “Hey boy!” That’s love on a personal level! As his family, Coach will live on through the stories, wisdom, and humorous things he’d do because he will always be with you in spirit!

His physical presence will be missed, for sure… but his impact, imprint, and legacy will live on through his family and every life he touched…for as Coach would say… “we family”!

May the very God of peace comfort and keep you all, is my prayer!

When I was told of his passing a sadness came over me; then a BIG smile! I could then see him walking the halls of Eau Claire High School, standing in his class teaching, talking to Coach Trapp, or asking if I had a ride to the basketball game (lol). No matter where or when you saw him, there was a quick smile, a friendly nod or if you weren’t in class, “…where’re you suppose to be….?” I remember Coach Glymph and his wife’s kindness, humility and thoughtfulness toward me as well as everyone who entered their sphere.

Thank you to the Glymph Family for sharing him with Eau Claire High School! Thank you for allowing him to stand in the gap for so many of us! 90. Thanks to the Glymph family for sharing the coach with us. I interviewed him for our church’s newsletter (Bethlehem Baptist Church on Lyon Street) one year back in the ‘90s and had to wait in the boys’ locker room. Well one of the basketball players was using some unpleasant language without realizing that I was in there. So one of the other players said “man you see that lady sitting over there, Imma tell Coach.” And to my delight and surprise, the young came over and apologized and literally begged the other player not to tell on him. I’ve told that story over and over through the years. That was my one and only time meeting Coach and so glad I did.

It goes without saying the respect and love that the players had for him. His impact will be forever.

I am so honored to have known him. Condolences to the Glymph Family and thank you for sharing him with all of us.

Coach G, was and will always be a Father figure, Mentor, and Friend to many of the young men and women who passed through those halls. Coach G. has been promoted, so we won’t say Goodbye, we will say, see you later.

  103. To the Glymph family, my prayers and thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Coach Glymph was an awesome man and will be greatly missed by many. I would like to thank his wife and children for sharing him with so many people. I first met his at W.A. Perry and a group of girls would always go to the front of the school to wait until he was dropped off by his wife because we wanted to watch him kiss his wife. I attended Eau Claire and he was there. My two sons also attended Eau Claire and one played basketball and ran track and field. Coach Glymph was a mentor, father figure to young men and he was also funny. My son, Frankie decided that he wanted to play football in his senior year and was not going to do track and field. He came home and told me Coach Glymph was not speaking to him. He talked with Coach Glymph and they worked something out where he was able to do both winter sports. I went to PTA meeting and Coach Glymph told me about the situation and said Frankie was a sad looking young man because he was not talking to him because he knew all basketball players had to run track. Coach Glymph and his wife traveled to Salisbury N.C. to see my son inducted to the Livingstone College Hall of Fame. It was Coach Glymph that called the college about my son, and he received a scholarship in Track and Field. That night, people in that Banquet Hall heard about Coach Glymph unconditional LOVE for his players and the people he met. He was a GIANT of a man. He has finished his purpose here on Earth and has gone to a better place, a place not made by man. May the family find Peace and Strength in knowing that God is with you.

Remembrance of George: I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one.
I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done.
I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways.
Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun.
Of happy memories that I leave when life is done. -H. Marshall-

We greeted each other as Homey for so many years that we probably had forgotten each others first name(lol). How would I have known that when Homey called me on Monday that God would have given Homey his wings on Wednesday. I will never forget his upbeat voice when I answer him saying to me “Homey I saw where you text me twice to check up on me, Im not feeling well he said. I”ll call you back tomorrow if Im feeling better. I said OK Homey, I Pray you feel better soon. That was a constant statement I have told him so so many times. I didnt know it would be my last.

Homey was very competive in everything he did. Bowling was his second Love after basketball. I know that you now have the strength you need to bowl again. Cant wait to bowl with you again Homey.

  187. The purpose of life is not to be happy. Life is about being helpful, honorable, compassionate, and having it make some difference that you have lived and lived well. It is your unlimited power to care and love that can make the most significant difference in the quality of life. Kindness quite simply is the rent we must pay for the space we occupy on this planet. It is possible to make a difference in someone’s life in big and small ways. Often said, “…it takes a village to raise a child….” We believe that it takes a village for the survival of one another because we are not islands. Coach George Glymph uniquely showed love to everyone he encountered. If you were a stranger in his presence, that is because you wanted to be one. He never treated people as strangers and genuinely accepted those who may be different from him. He lived and spoke the Word of God. Coach Glymph will forever remain in our hearts and minds. Be assured that we are praying and interceding for your family. We want to remind you of the words from Psalm 18:2, “…the Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower….” The Lord is there for you, and He will not abandon nor forsake you. In Him, you will find strength, salvation, and compassion to face the coming days. This moment may be quite challenging for you, but with God, you are stronger. Others will see He shines through you. May God’s peace wrap around you like a blanket. And may you be forever reminded that you are being held securely by the overcoming love of God. Take it minute by minute with your hand in God’s hand. You are not alone (Romans 8:35-39). For the Father will comfort and keep you during this time of bereavement. Jesus Christ came to heal the brokenhearted and has promised you everlasting consolation and hope through His grace. Trust in the Father’s faithfulness with your whole heart and lean not to your understanding (Proverbs 3:5). Acknowledge Him in all your ways, and He shall direct your path (Proverbs 3:6).

We appreciate all he did for the Shamrock family and so many other lives he influenced. He set a model example for others to follow. Take comfort in God’s word John 14.

  197. My sincere condolences are extended to the family. Most remember him as Coach Glymph, but I remember him more as a bright , respectable young man known as baby George in the Waverly ( now Lower Waverly ) community.
He was a friend of my brother, the late Qscar Johnson. George and I attended the same Richland One schools ( Waverly Elementary and Booker T Washington High School) were he was an academic athlete and role model. Also fellow alumni of Benedict College. We both became Math teachers in Richland One. He was one of my daughter’s teacher at Eau Claire High School ( Excellent teacher who taught, nurtured and cared about his students. RIP my friend. Great man of God , teacher, coach, and role model. You will be missed.
