  14. Dr. Whaley was well known for everything positive that you can think of even my father had the pleasure of knowing and attending college where Dr. Whaley worked WHILE he was there…Dr. Whaley will truly be missed at Brookdale of Columbia by The staff AND the residents. He literally brightened up our days with his infectious smile. He knew what kind of impact he had on peoples lives and he showed the type of man he was while living there, he even showed us that if we sat down to eat our lunch you’d better believe he was coming to “share” lunch with us and we enjoyed sharing with him! His wife Mrs. Whaley came faithfully throughout the years he resided there. As well as his beloved children, sisters, brother ( mr Canty) and friends. I can only imagine how Dr. Whaley was before he moved in to BSL. I’ve heard so many wonderful stories from too many people to count. My favorite and fondest memory will be how his face would light up and that million dollar smile would show when he saw a familiar face. Dr. “David” Whaley …we love you Thank you Lord for giving him to this world for the time you did!

  22. Condolences to the Whaley family. After learning about the passing of Dr. Whaley, my heart is broken because he was definitely my hero. I met him when I arrived at Benedict as a 16 year old shy freshman . Throughout life he always reminded me that I was one of the smartest individuals that he had the pleasure of teaching. I am who I am because of Dr. Whaley. There are so many things that I can say about this great man. Thanks for believing in me and teaching me so much knowledge and especially about life.

  24. I’m really so saddened by this loss. My deepest, heartfelt condolences and prayers are with his family.
You know, the last time I actually saw David, he and I were on the golf course. He’d been goading me via messages through my mom about us playing a round of golf. Detailing how he was going to just destroy me when we played. When we finally got that opportunity, he did win but it was not the destruction he’d advertised but rather a close affair that actually came down to the last hole. I remember this day vividly because for me it was the quintessential David Whaley I knew and loved.
In case you didn’t know, in golf, it’s customary to complement other players when they make a good shot. It’s also customary for the player receiving the praise to respond graciously. So anyway, on the 18th hole he made a great approach shot that placed his ball really close to the hole pretty much sealing the win for him. I, recognizing the significance of this shot, gave him kudos saying “Wow, great shot David.” Mr. Whaley looked at me seriously then very calmly said, “I know” and walked to cart. All of a sudden at that moment I played back our entire day on the course and came to the realization that he’d actually been telling me that all day when I complemented him.
    “Nice shot Dave”. “I know”.
    “Good putt Dave”. “I know”.
So when I got back to the cart I sat down, looked at him and said, “You accept complements very well don’t you?”
He looked at me, paused, and then just burst out into laughter.
It was a great day. We talked about everything from sports to politics to family to exercise. We just had a wonderful time and vowed we’d have another round but unfortunately our busy lives delayed our rematch. In hindsight, I’m not upset about it now because there could be no better memory for me of the man. That was my David Whaley. When I was younger, everything about him illustrated what a man should be. Confident, smart, accomplished, athletic and funny. His handshake was as commanding and firm as his speaking voice and I’ve tried to incorporate pieces of his example into my life. It’s always said that it takes a village to raise a child. I was so very lucky that he was a part of mine.
Thank you David for everything you were for me. I won’t ever forget you sir. And yes.. I know you know.

  93. My heart is deeply saddened by the loss of my dear Uncle Dave, who meant the world to me. While I’m saying this from my perspective, I’m confident that my point of view is widely shared in this sphere of his family and friends. Anyone who’s had an influential uncle in their lives, understands how those individuals can be like a second father. When you think about it, that’s what a true uncle should be. By that definition, my Uncle Dave IS a true uncle. Although, he was a cool uncle, he wasn’t “the” cool uncle that would just let you get away with anything. Watching someone that was a relative of mine that I was so fond of, had a tremendous influence on who I’ve become. Obviously, there are many others in my life that have molded me, but today I’m sharing what I love about my Uncle Dave. Knowing that Uncle Dave was on the staff at Benedict, made me more comfortable with the idea of attending college myself, and particularly Benedict. He is not only an uncle to me, but a life mentor that demonstrated on a daily basis how joyous life can be. I will truly miss his hugs, his smile and the “whistle” that signaled that his presence was near. I have so many cherished memories of Uncle Dave, and he has been such an influence on my life that I will always miss him, but know he will always be a part of who I am.

Rest in peace with God, Uncle Dave. You certainly deserve it.
