Elder Robert Lee Scott, Sr. peacefully departed this life in his home on Sabbath morning, July 3, 2021, after 85 years of a wonderful life. Robert Lee Scott, Sr. was a native of Eastover, South Carolina, born on May 2, 1936, to George Scott and Rosa Lee Washington Scott. Robert attended Webber High School in Eastover, South Carolina, where he was affectionately known as Little Bubba. In high school, he held various positions such as President of the Senior Class, President of Student Council, Captain of the Football Team, Editor-in-Chief of Eagle Yearbook, Debating Club, T. S. Lee Dance Group, Vice President of Choral Society, and Vice President of FTA, (Future Teacher Association). As a senior in high school, Robert was voted “Who’s Who” as Most Courteous, Best Liked, Most Popular, Best Athletes, and Most Friendly. While in high school, Robert met his “Sweetheart,” Yvonne Lee Henry. It was love at first sight! Robert asked Yvonne’s hand in marriage several times, and the answer was always, “I’m not ready.” In 1958, he enlisted in the United States Army, and was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. When Robert came home for the Christmas holidays and again asked Yvonne to marry him, the answer was, “I’m ready!” Robert married the love of his life, the beautiful Yvonne Henry, on December 30, 1958. Later, while stationed in Fort Ord, California, Robert, was introduced to the Lord, and became a baptized member of the Friendship Baptist Church in Seaside, California. There in California, a beautiful baby girl (Sonya) was born, affectionately known as the “firstborn.” Upon returning to Columbia, South Carolina, three more beautiful children were added to their union (Robert Jr., Kathleen, and Stanley). In addition to raising his own four children, Robert helped raise his wife’s five siblings, parenting them with love and respect, as if they were his own. In Columbia, SC, he and his family began to attend the First Nazareth Baptist Church, and were actively involved. Yearning to continue growing in his Christian walk, Robert attended a community evangelistic tent meeting every night conducted by Pastor Benjamin Cummings on Farrow Road in 1968. Convicted by the preaching and biblical teachings, he chose to become a baptized member of the Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church on August 31, 1968. Faithful Christian leaders trained and guided him during his new journey, and he became faithfully involved in various ministries. He served as a deacon and then Head Deacon. He was a Sabbath School Teacher and Superintendent. He served in the Community Service Ministry, Prison Ministry, MV (Missionary Volunteer Society), SC Senior Citizen Ministries, Ephesus Choir, Jubilee Choir, and was ordained as an Elder. Elder Scott was compassionate and loved young people. In the 1970s, a group was established at the Ephesus SDA Church known as the O’Neal Singers. This group of young people ministered throughout the state, under the leadership of Leon O’Neal, and directed by Shawn Smith Robinson. Elder Scott would travel and record the beautiful gospel music rendered at Campmeeting and Youth Federations. Elder Scott rarely missed attending events in support of the young people programs. He was always willing and happy to assist with their endeavors. Elder Scott not only was a great leader and mentor to the young people, but he also coached the Ephesus Church Basketball Team. He led the team to several championship victories and won the State Tournament in 1994. He taught his team that it was not only about winning, but it was also about displaying good sportsmanship, being respectful, and having great Christian fun. Not only did Elder Scott love young people, but senior citizens as well. When he was young, he loved spending time in the presence of senior citizens because of the wisdom they would share with him. He shared the same wisdom in return with the young people he mentored. Elder Scott’s spiritual “gifts made room for him” and many recognized his participation and passion in ministry at the church. He was honored and recognized in many ways. He received acknowledgments, awards, and appreciationsch as “Faithful Years of Dedicated Services to Prison Ministry;” “Faithful & Dedicated Awards,” “Music Ministry Award,” “President of SDA Senior Citizens Awards,” “Senior Superlative of the Year Award,” “Spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ award from the Women Ministry Department,” “Carver Garden Club Appreciation,” “First Nazareth Baptist Church Couples Ministry,” “Power to Prevent Completion by SC DHEC Diabetes Division,” “Webber High School Alumni Association,” “Ephesus Jubilee Choir Lead Tenor,” and 1987 Alice Slater Youth Federation Award.” Elder Scott loved giving bible studies. He wanted to tell everyone about the love of Jesus and that Jesus Loves You! He was always giving someone a ride to and from church, taking them to a doctor’s appointment, or just picking up a total stranger just because they were in need. He helped at the Oliver Gospel Mission and Transitional Shelter. Elder Scott’s ministry in life was “to serve others.” His life’s example and motto practiced was, “if I can help somebody as I travel along the way, then my living shall not be in vain.” Robert was a faithful, active member of the church for over 50 years. He was a faithful servant of God and a friend to man. He was employed at Dixie Radio (later known as Resource Electronics) for over 39 years, where he retired as a salesman. Customers looked forward to being assisted by Robert, as he provided excellent customer service. He was so loved and appreciated by his customers that they would return to the store, not to purchase items but to visit. Robert had such a caring spirit his customers enjoyed his company; they knew they would receive encouraging words. After retirement, Robert became even more involved in church and community work. He was proud of his community by serving on the Neighborhood Association as the Neighborhood Chaplain. He also received the award for the Neighborhood Volunteer of the Year. He took pride in keeping his community clean and keeping the grass well-manicured, even though he always had problems with this lawnmower. Robert was an avid reader, loved studying his bible, watching history documentaries, westerns, and sports. He also enjoyed singing, visiting the sick, and he looked forward to picking up his grandchildren after school, encouraging them to do well, and providing them with special treats. His favorite scripture was Proverbs 5:5, “In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy path.” Elder Scott was well respected and led an exemplary life. His impact on family, community, and work was extraordinary. He was known for his kind-heartedness, generosity, humility, love for his family and his church family. His mission in life was often verbalized, “it is better to be a servant of God.” During Robert’s illness, he never complained of any pain or discomfort to the very end. He was surrounded by his family when he took his last breath. Robert enjoyed singing God’s praises, and now he sleeps until Jesus returns to take him home. He leaves a legacy of being a hard worker, dependable, compassionate, and generous, showing Christlikeness. Elder Robert Lee Scott, Sr. was preceded in death by: his father, George Scott and his mother, Rosa Lee Scott; his siblings, Thomas Scott, George Scott, Jr., William Scott, and Robert Lee Henry, Sr. Elder Robert Lee Scott, Sr. is survived by: his loving wife, Yvonne H. Scott of 62 1/2 years; his children, Sonya K. Burrell (Stanley), Robert L. Scott, Jr. (Angie), Kathleen S. Williams (Ivan), Stanley J. Scott (Rita). He was so proud of his six grandchildren; Christopher Burrell (Shay), TeQuan Scott, Imani Williams, Ivan Williams, II, Jevon Scott, and Myles Scott; and six siblings of his wife whom he helped raise, Thomas Henry, Frances Henry, Lizzie Tucker, Elaine Vance, Albert Henry, and Janice (Deryl) Keith who was the youngest and was like another “daughter” two sisters-in-law, Eunice Scott and Mable Henry; two godchildren, Yvette Staley and Kendra Myers; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

  1. When I think of Elder Scott I think of family. My grandfather loved Elder Scott so much. Over the years I have grown to respect him to the utmost for his character, love, sincerity, patience, kind words, faith in God, and his service to so many. He is a true example of Christ’s love and character. He will be missed. Elder Scott has always been there for my family during my grandfather and grandmother’s passing and the recent passing of my father. He was faithful in visiting him and praying for him every day in the hospital. For that, I am truly grateful. I want to thank God for blessing me with the opportunity to know Elder Scott. He was one of a kind. I look forward to seeing him in the kingdom because I know without a shadow of a doubt he will be there. To the family, I pray that God keeps you and holds you close, and comforts you during this time. We love you. Loutrina Staley

  2. “The death of Brorher Scott was indeed a shock for me. To Sister Scott and family: for you to have lived with such a gentle and caring man was truly a blessing. He was also a blessing to others. I am so glad I got a chance to be a part of the Prison Ministry as he was, being a part of the Jubilee Choir as he was, and I enjoyed Brother Scott leading the song, “Better Days are Coming, Bye and Bye.” How true that song is now. May the God of Comfort, comfort you and your family.”🙏🙏🙏

  26. To Mrs. Scott & Family: As you plan & prepare to celebrate the life of your life’s partner & the children’s Father, please know that so many who knew & respected Elder Scott, and who was seen as a man of God for his many acts of kindness over the years will miss him along with the family. I remember when the family began worshipping at First Nazareth and the children were very young and in tow with you & Elder Scott each Sunday. That picture of a family attending & praying together has stayed with me over the years. As time passes , & changes occur, oftentimes we are still left with that positive impression of a ” good man” leading his family to Christ through churvh attendance May the many memories shared as a family, be as precious to each of you, as they will be remembered by me . In a eulogistic worship earlier, the Minister reminded all that ” when walking with Jesus, you’re never walking alone, for you are in the Sheperd’s Care…and you are at a time such as this. Be blessed in all that you continue to do.
