Retired Master Gunnery Sergeant Wilson Gidron, Sr., affectionately known as “Mr. Bill,” was born in Elloree, South Carolina on June 28,1933 to the late Joseph and Carolina Hare Gidron. With his wife by his side, he departed this earthly life on Thursday, June 3, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Jacob Gidron, James Gidron, Q. Louis Gidron, and Ernest Gidron; two sisters, Georgia Cannon and Dora Williams; and his first wife, Louvenia Smith Gidron. Mr. Bill was educated in the public schools of Elloree, SC. After his retirement, he furthered his education and graduated from Midlands Technical College. Mr. Bill will always be remembered as a hardworking man. He was a proud member of the United States Marine Corp, where he served faithfully until his retirement. His military career allowed him to serve in countries around the world, including Vietnam and Japan. After his retirement from the Marine Corp, he worked for the Department of Corrections, where he also retired. Mr. Bill attended Round Top Baptist Church until his health began to decline. He enjoyed serving others through the church’s food pantry ministry. He also enjoyed working outside in his yard and garden, cooking, and spending time with his family. Mr. Bill leaves to cherish his precious memory; his wife of 36 years, Yvonne Kelly Gidron; his children, Angela (Melvin) Gidron, Wilson (Malika) Gidron, Jr., Bryana (Jarryl) Gidron, all of Columbia, SC, and Ayana (Presheonia) Gidron, of Charlotte, NC; his stepchildren, Rodney (Tracey) Thompson and Andrew Thompson, both of Columbia, SC; his grandchildren, Shannon Gidron, Sr. of Las Vegas, NV, Antonio Gidron, Sr., Jordan Gidron, Christopher Grant, Jacoby Capers, Savonne Capers, Layla Capers, Grant Thompson, T’Andra Thompson, and Sydney Thompson, all of Columbia, SC; his brother, Llue Gidron, of Columbia, SC; his sisters, Annie Majors, of Fairfield, CA and Mazie Williams, of San Francisco, CA. Mr. Bill also leaves behind eight great grandchildren; seven sisters-in-law; seven brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss him dearly.

  1. I never realized Gysgt Gidron achieved such the high rank he did and retired from the marine corps. I assisted him with VA many times and by far he was the nicest and most easy going vet I ever encountered working for the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Rest in peace.
