Mr. Alvin Gregory House, affectionately known as Greg, was the world’s greatest son, brother, friend, cousin, and nephew. He was born in Columbia, South Carolina, on March 24, 1977, to Gracie Simons House and Allen Johnson House. Greg passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 29, 2021, and although he was in pain throughout the last couple of years, Greg came out of this a real hero and stayed strong until his transition. Greg will always be remembered for his kind heart, generosity, devotion to his loved ones and his tremendous sense of humor. The love, good times, and laughs shared with him will always serve as light and inspiration to those who knew him. Greg was a proud alumnus of W. J. Keenan High School and Morehouse College, in Atlanta, Georgia, where he obtained a Bachelors of Arts in History. After graduation, Greg spent the majority of his professional career at the Columbia Housing Authority, where he served in a number of capacities. Most importantly, he proved to be a strong advocate for all of the residents with whom he worked, and always strove to make their environment more comfortable. Greg had a number of hobbies and interests that allowed him to enjoy his true passion - meeting new people. After speaking to someone for five minutes, Greg no longer considered them a stranger. Greg also was an avid traveler which led him to travel across the U.S., the Caribbean, and Europe. He truly enjoyed going to new places, trying new foods, and exploring new cultures. He enjoyed working out, exercising, and loved telling his cousins how many more times he made it to the gym each week than they did. Greg was a great “chef” and enjoyed making his own meals on a regular basis. He even had his own special recipe to make boiled peanuts! Besides meeting new people and traveling, Greg loved spending time with his family including his siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins of all ages. He was always present at family gatherings and was always the “life of the party.” His family loved having him around and enjoying his jokes and constant teasing that kept everyone laughing. Beyond his devotion to his loved ones, Greg proved to be the world’s biggest Tampa Bay Bucs fan. And while he struggled with them for many a season, he relished in their Super Bowl LV victory last February…and let everyone know about it every chance he got! Greg was such a devoted son, brother, cousin, nephew, and friend. He grew up attending Antioch A.M.E. Zion Church, in Eastover, South Carolina, and Red Hill Baptist Church, in Gadsden, South Carolina. Evidence of his faith was seen in his kindness, which knew no boundaries, and his spirituality that he relied upon throughout his life. Greg was preceded in death by: his parents, Allen Johnson House; and Gracie Simons House. Mr. Alvin Gregory House is survived by: his sister, Tammy House (Harry) Rutherford, of Columbia, South Carolina; his brother, Alan House, of Los Angeles; his godparents, Edward and Brenda Wider, both of Orlando, Florida; three nephews, Harry “Torr” Rutherford, J. Todd (Megan) Rutherford, and Trace (Antoinette) Rutherford, all of Columbia, South Carolina; a number of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends around the world. His presence and laugh will be sorely missed, but his light will shine in each of us forever.
