As the sun rose on September 22, 1942, in Columbia, South Carolina, God saw the needs of this world and blessed Rosa Lee Reese Oree and Alvin Oree, Jr. with a son, Alvin Oree, III. At sunset on Sunday, July 11, 2021, God saw that the need had been met and called His servant home to Glory.
USAR Retired Major, Alvin Oree, III was a 1961 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. He earned his Bachelorβs Degree from Benedict College, and Masterβs Degree from The Citadel in Charleston, SC. He began his teaching career at The Mather School, in Beaufort, SC, and taught high school and junior college. He earned a Professional Masters + 30 Hours Teaching Certificate for the State of South Carolina, taught for 38 years, 32 of which were in Charleston County. Twice recognized as Teacher of The Year at Rivers Middle School, in Charleston, SC, he was also the recipient of many honors and awards throughout his career. His military schooling included the Army OCS Class of 1967, Army Officerβs Basic Course 1972 and Advance Course 1974, US Army Command, and General Staff College 1977. He taught numerous military and civilian courses, also earning credits from the University of South Carolina and the University of Southern Mississippi.
Alvin taught Health and Physical Education, developed educational programs often personally funded, and worked with hundreds of at-risk students, was a Scout Leader, an athletic coach, and worked for many years as Recreation Leader with the City of Charleston Recreation Department. He planned and conducted 8-weeks Summer Camps to provide supervised activities for children ages 6-15 when school was not in session. His guidance and devotion to young people, both in school and recreation, is still very evident by the admiration shown to him from so many whose lives he touched during his service to the Charleston area. This earned him the coveted Golden Eagle Award presented February 22, 2010, for his contributions to their Black History Celebrations.
He retired from teaching in 2003, and in December 2015 also ended his 43-year employment with the City of Charleston Recreation Department. In appreciation for his many years of service, Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley issued a Proclamation declaring December 30, 2015, ALVIN OREE, III DAY in the City of Charleston.
Alvin had a great love of sports closely following especially the Gamecocks and other high school, college, and professional teams. As an athlete himself, he had always participated in sports. He refereed boxing matches, played softball, baseball, and ran track with military teams during his overseas tours of duty. He traveled extensively enjoying the sites of many states and abroad. He was loving and giving to siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives, taking family on trips and vacations, generously sharing whatever he had, especially at holidays.
Alvin Oree, III was baptized at Antioch Baptist Church on Wheeler Hill. He was a life-long member having served as a Trustee for many years, sang with the Male Chorus and the Reese Memorial Singers, served with the Brotherhood, on the Usher Board, and supported the church in its ministries. Christmas Fruit Gifting was one of his favorite efforts and he supervised the project each year with assembly-line perfection. He was ordained as a Deacon at Antioch on March 4, 2012, and served faithfully until his death, never wanting to miss a Sunday of service.
He married the former Ruth Ann Oakman Parish on February 10, 2007. She along with those who remain, will lovingly cherish warm and wonderful memories of his full life are: his children and grandchildren : Ayinde (Erica) Waring (Legend, Zaire, Kingston), of Hanahan, SC; Alvin Oree, IV, (Alvin V, Gumaine), of Summerville, SC; Ericka Oree, (McKinsey Boone), of Gaston, SC; Lionell (Michelle) Parish, (Laurielle Gibson), of Spartanburg, SC; and Allen Parish, Columbia, SC; siblings: Rosa (Olin) Jackson, of Augusta, GA, Elizabeth (Ronald) Everett, of Crowley, Texas, Geraland O. Ruth, Al, Ericka, Ayinde, Rosa Mae, Sam, Libby, Geraland, Esther, Lila, and all other family members, you have our deepest, heartfelt condolences in the loss of Junior… a loving husband, a great father, a wonderful brother, and a loving grandfather. He was also a great cousin. As a young boy and a young man, I always looked up to and admired Junior. I remember the many times as a boy that he gave me baseball bats, gloves, and balls. Also as a young boy, every time I heard the word “Charleston”, I always associated it with Junior because he epitomized Charleston to me. Back in the early ’90s when I was assigned to a U.S. Coast Guard cutter (ship) homeported at the USCG Base on Tradd Street in Charleston, several of my shipmates and I would play full-court basketball on Tuesday and Thursday mornings during the ship’s PT hour. Little did I know that Junior was in the school building just beyond the base property watching out of the third story window. After he told me of this and how he enjoyed watching us play, I started showing off with behind the back passes, long jump shots, and running sky hooks because I knew he was watching and I wanted to impress my big cuz. Junior was a very accomplished, impressive, and amazing man. I had known for many years some of his personal accomplishments, but have just learned of others. Wow! But with all of his military and educational achievements, he was a very humble, down to earth, loving man. I will miss you cousin. May you rest in peace. Bravo Zulu! Thank you for your service! Thank you for being the great man that you were.
Cousin Alvin was an admired man by all. He was a blessing to his family, community, church and the world. I will miss him dearly. My condolences to Ruth and family, may God comfort us all as we mourn the loss of Alvin Oree III.

It was said: That if you can’t remember someone aloud, they die twice. It’s a hard pill to swallow knowing that a mentor, brother, a life skill teacher, co-work and best friend for more than thirty five years has gone to be with our father in heaven. What can I say about this awesome bless man of God, a gentle caring man, a mentor to some, a teacher to most a loving husband and father.
