  1. The Family of Coach Bobby Young,

It was with great sadness that I learned of Coach Young’s recent passing. What an amazing man and the legacy he leaves behind will continue to live on through the lives of those he served so faithfully. I had the pleasure of knowing and watching Coach at work during the time I taught at Columbia HS in the late 1990’s. He produced championships and championship people. Please know that Coach Young’s many friends and peers in the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association have you in their thoughts and prayers. May you feel God’s comfort and peace in this difficult time.

    In His Service,

    Charles Gee
Chaplain – South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association

  6. I met Bobby when I coached basketball at AC Flora over 40 years ago. We worked summer camps together and talked about basketball and life in general. Bobby was a gentleman who understood that being a coach was more than just teaching basketball. He cared for his athletes and his students while projecting high expectations for both. Bobby’s legacy of excellence is exhibited by his students and even more his biological children, Tracie and Vickie. I know Bobby is resting in peace and I send my condolences to the family. BE BLESSED AND CHERISH THE POSITIVE MEMORIES!!

Please don’t say that Mr. Cooper gave up, Just say that he gave in. Don’t say that he lost the battle, for it was GOD’s war to lose or win. Please don’t say how good he was, but that he did his best. Just say he tried to do what was right, to give the most he could, not do the less. I pray that words of comfort are helping your families to know how much Coach Young positively impacted the lives of so many individuals. He will be missed because he was dearly loved.

  19. Condolences on the loss of your loved one. Coach Young was an awesome teacher of life, I can proudly say he was one of many that shaped my life during my time at The High. I was not a basketball player but a cheerleader and therefore spent lots of time over 4 years around Coach Young; he treated us all the same! He always called me Canada, even years later when I would see him at a game. Traci; I pray you, your mom and sister cherish the memories your family created and that those memories always bring you all comfort.

  20. Bobby and I met his freshmen year at Allen. We were both athletes. He played Baseball and I played football. He was gracious, kind, and considerate of others as a young man. He was one of the best hitters on Allen’s Championship team in 1960. We made him a Kappa Alpha Psi man in 1960. We were inducted in to Allen hall of fame together. He represented Kappa with the same grit he rendered to all his endeavors, marriage, profession, parenthood & friendships.

  21. To the Young family, our community has suffered a tremendous loss in the passing of Coach Young. Our friendship started in 1972.
He and I played with Gerald Israel and the Soul Ambassadors band and later our professional teaching careers crossed paths in Richland School District One. Bobby was a great teacher of not only young women and men but also coaches who grew from his knowledge of coaching styles and philosophies. He always had a a joke or two to tell and kept us in stiches from laughter at camps and conferences. He will be truly missed. R.I.P. Coach!

  73. Momma Mary, Vicki, Traci, and the ‘Cooper Kids’, words cannot express the sympathy I feel at this moment. I remember when the Young family moved in next door…, so many years ago. Our ‘circle of families’ always looking out for one another.
Coach always doing something to his lawns; forever working in his yard… either cutting the grass or trimming the hedges. And if not the yard, then preparing the ground for his summer garden.

I’ll carry fond memories of those years with Coach at CHS; times when I’d hear him playing his instruments; rehearsing in his garage, and creating his own style of soulful music.

Or yet, laugh at the memory of how Coach was fussing with himself the entire time he had worked tirelessly washing off the big colorful hopscotch that Vicki had drawn with her favorite chalk!
Needless to say, that that never happened again!

The talks, the laughs, the words of advice, his laughter, his smile, the love and pride for his family, and his love for Girls’/Women’s Basketball… are the things that I will remember most about Coach Bobby Ray Young.

Coach Young, you are deeply loved and will be missed by so so many.
