Trustee Freddie Sumter, Sr. was born February 12, 1934 in Hopkins, South Carolina. He was the sixth of ten children born to Richard and Celia Jones Sumter. He departed this earthly life on Friday, July 2, 2021, at Prisma Health Baptist Hospital, in Columbia, SC. Trustee Freddie Sumter, Sr., also known as Daddy, Pops, Brotha, and Buddy, was educated in the public schools of Richland County. He was employed with the South Carolina Department of Mental Health, and retired after 35 years of service. Trustee Freddie Sumter, Sr. was baptized at an early age. He was a faithful member at Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church, in Hopkins, South Carolina. He was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of his life, Martha Smith. Their union sustained for 56 years. He enjoyed going to church, quartet programs, watching WWE wrestling, cutting grass on his riding lawn mower, and being surrounded by his children and grandchildren. Freddie was known as the smooth sharp dressing man. You could always find him in a nice suit and hat on any given day. Trustee Freddie Sumter, Sr. had a love for quartet music. After being advised by Reverend Dr. Blakley N. Scott, he along with the late Deacon John Smith, and the late Deacon Lindburg Sumter, organized and established the Male Chorus of Mount Moriah Baptist Church, in Hopkins, South Carolina, some 45 years ago. To this day, the Male Chorus of Mount Moriah Baptist Church is still known for singing quartet style songs. Some of his favorite quartet groups were: The Canton Spirituals, Lee Williams and the Spiritual QCs, and The Blind Boys of Alabama. But his most favorite group has always been the Male Chorus of the Mount Moriah Baptist Church. He was always their number one fan. If ever you saw Freddie at a quartet concert, you would be sure to see him rocking side to side enjoying every moment. Trustee Freddie Sumter, Sr. was preceded in death by: his parents, Richard and Celia Jones Sumter; his wife, Martha Smith Sumter; sisters, Louise Sumter and Leah Sumter Moore; and brothers, Wille Sumter, Sr. and Jesse Sumter. The precious memory of Trustee Freddie Sumter, Sr. will forever be cherished by his loving children: sons, Trustee Freddie (Carolyn) Sumter, Jr., of Eastover, South Carolina, Deacon Cleveland (Brittany) Jackson, Deacon Bryant (Patricia) Sumter, both of Columbia, South Carolina, and Deacon Jesse (Bessie) Sumter, of Hopkins, South Carolina; daughters, Margaret (Joseph) Robinson, Julia (Jeffrey) Jacobs, and Sandra Sumter, all of Hopkins, South Carolina; a brother, Richard (Edna) Sumter, of Paterson, New Jersey; sisters, Rosetta (Jesse) Sims, Mary Sims, Retha Sumter, all of Paterson, New Jersey, and Geraldine (Elwood) McCollum, of Gadsden, South Carolina; 28 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren; all of whom he loved dearly and unconditionally. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends, all of whom join the family in sharing the pain of his passing.
