I was saddened when I heard the news! Take comfort in knowing you were a part of a well-lived life. May time soften the edges and ease your burden. Leo is the reason I came to love my role as Mental Health Professional &Activity Therapist-Forensic Services (Allen Project). I gained my Ed.D (’14) Argosy University-Sarasota-Education Psychology & Behavioral Health. “OUR” 1st course was on “sanctions in sports” for which he was most knowledgeable!! 25. My deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Leo McKie. We were classmates at St. Augustine’s College, and Leo was always a leader because he commanded the respect of our entire class. He was the person who was always involved in the projects we engaged in, always lending that helping hand and encouraging us until the job was complete. Many were the days that we trekked down to the gym to see him razzle-dazzle on the basketball court. I cannot say which was larger–his smile or his heart. I am saddened at the news of his passing but I rejoice in the fact that he can now receive his heavenly reward. We love you, Leo, but God loves you best.

  27. My sincere condolences to the Leo McKie Family. I have known Leo and his entire family all my life. They lived on one corner of McAllister and McDonald Street and we lived on the other. Mr.McKie, Leo’s Father, later built a new brick house three streets over but Leo and Sammie were always back especially playing basketball in Rev.Dr.Blakely Scott back yard. I have pictures of us camping out in tents in the neighborhood woods. Leo was special, he was the shortest among us but he had the biggest heart. I was a class behind him and I went to Johnson C. Smith University on a football scholarship and I would see Leo doing his thing on the hardwood at St.Augustine all over the CIAA conference. Leo you made us proud from the Edgewood Neighborhood. Leo was such a great person, he was my brother from the neighborhood, he was my fraternity brother, Omega Psi Phi, but most of all he was my brother in Christ, thank you Jesus. You’ve finished race you’ve kept the faith now come on up and accept your crown of glory!!!

  39. I am so honored to have known such a “high performer” in so many areas of his life and the life of so many others. I was fortunate to work with Leo for more than 25 years at Department of Mental Health, Forensic Service Division. Leo was an “expert” who developed and directed the activities of rehabilitation and was a strong advocate for persons with chronic mental illness and those persons disenfranchised. WE did some amazing treatment and care for our clientele that was considered “best practice”. He truly loved what he did, he clientele that he served and the staff that he called “friends”
We extend our thoughts and prayers to his beautiful family and other persons that he adored and often spoke of. We have been blessed because he was consistently a stellar professional, an unconditional supporter and a true friend for so many years. Well done thy good and faithful servant! Take your rest with our Lord!!!

We are saddened and he is is already missed by the best treatment team members ever, including Rev. Alma O’Bryant, clinical chaplain, Mrs. Josephine Mitchell, MSN, nursing director and myself, licensed social worker/ psychotherapist.

Dear Mrs. Karen McKie and Family,

I was heartbroken to hear of Mr. Leo’s passing. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you during this incredibly difficult time.

Mr. Leo wasn’t just my father’s fraternity brother—he was family to us/ you all are family. My siblings and I always felt the genuine love and respect he had for us, and that meant so much. In my mind, I can still picture those summer afternoons when Dad, Mr. Leo, and Mr. Spider would hang out—Mr. Leo always so laid-back in his signature T-shirt, shorts, and sandals. The sound of their chants, stepping, the smell of the grill, and the laughter they shared created memories that will stay with me forever.

Mr. Leo embodied warmth, brotherhood, and kindness. His steady presence and easygoing spirit made everyone feel welcome. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

May you find comfort in the legacy of love and friendship he leaves behind. I am holding you all in my heart.

    With deepest sympathy,

  50. To the McKie Family:

Our deepest sympathy and condolences to the entire McKie Family. Leo and I have been friends for over 58 years. We were friends and basketball teammates at Saint Augustine’s University from 1966 to 1968.

Leo was not only an outstanding point guard, but a great athlete. The best. He and I stayed in touch over the last 58 years, talking almost once a month.

Leo and his beautiful wife were both present when I was inducted into the Saint Augustine University Hall of Fame in 2004, and my Conference Hall of Fame in 2019. Leo is a friend that will always be close to me and my family.

I wanted to travel to Columbia to attend the services to show my love and appreciation for one of the best friends I have ever known. Due to the short notice, and because Tulsa, Oklahoma is practically shut down because of a heavy snow and sleet storm, we are not able to travel.

Other than his wife, I never knew any of Leo’s family, but he spoke so highly of them, I feel as though I am part of the family.

God Bless you Leo. Will always love you man. The last time we spoke, you told me the truth, THAT YOU WOULD FIGHT TO THE END, YOU DID!!

  78. To The Family of Leo McKie:

My sincere and deepest sympathies to you on the passing of Leo.

I’ve known Leo my entire life, beginning when we were little boys —he was living on Read St. and I was living in Allen Benedict Court and my Dad owning a pool room on Read St.

Our relationship continued as basketball teammates at W.A. Perry, and C.A. Johnson. Leo was a gifted athlete and fierce competitor who I had the pleasure of playing with in games, and playing against in practice! Leo talked a good game also, and made all of us better!

I’ve seen many opponents underestimate his skills because of his size, but their perceptions quickly changed after just a couple of times up and down the court. He had the heart of a giant! He was the type of man you would go to war with!

I almost had a chance to play against him in college, but Henry Isaac and I were on the freshman team at Johnson C. Smith while Leo was a sophomore on the varsity at St. Augustine (where he was eventually inducted into the St. Augustine University Athletics Hall of Fame). I was then drafted into the Army my sophomore year at JC Smith, and eventually played at, and graduated from Benedict.

Our relationship continued when I became the principal of his children at St. Andrews Middle School.

Finally, our life-long relationship continued because of our involvement with the CAJ Mens Alumni Breakfast Club.

I thank God for Leo and the way He used him to enhance my life, and I hope that in some small way, I was a blessing to him! I’ll miss your presence my friend!

Family, may God surround you with His Precious Love, and infuse you with His Perfect and Divine Peace! Cherish the memories!

    Sincerely,
    Dr. Carlos “Billy” Smith

Another one among us that has tramsitioned to their heavenly reward is indeed a “wow moment”.

As a BTW graduate, Leo shall remain one among many CAJ graduates that I admired, espescially when our basketball teams met on the hardwood in our annual dueling at our perspective gymnasiums and also at the Township Auditorium annually

Those were the days when one, Leo McKie, would shoot from any angle or position & manage to swoosh that basketball in “net free”.

Didn’t like it at all, but you had to give the brother his due props for a display of stellar athleticism, and just ” natural talent” that appeared to be deeply imbedded in the McK!ie family genes.

But beyond that, Leo was just a quality guy as I knew him & as others have expressed and we shall miss him from out midst as his departure was a “Wow moment.” for many of us who knew and held him in high esteem!

May he rest from this earthly labor and enjoy his journey with Jesus!
