  1. Frances,

May you and your family continue to take joy in the life and time that you spent with your father. Be comforted in knowing that the love, the knowledge and the wisdom that he shared with you will last forever. As he did, pass it on.

  3. I was really saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Thompson. While growing up at my grandparents’ home(Wiggins), which was just a couple of houses down from him and Mrs. Thompson, I remember a very kind gentleman, who was well respected in the community. Mr. Thompson always smiled and had something good to say to me. May you all find solace in the word of God and in the fond memories you have of him.

  5. Extending God’s comfort and peace to the Thompson Family as they honor the legacy of their patriarch, Mr. James Thompson. Commitment to family, community, the military and Emanuel AME are the many attributes of Mr. Thompson. But, his welcoming nature and engaging conversation are the touching memories that I’ll always remember.

I was deeply saddened to learn of Mr. Thompson’s passing. He was a kind and gentle hearted friend. We lived in the same community and we would often sit on his porch and chat about our neighborhood, the schools and the goodness of the LORD. I always left our conversations feeling encouraged.
May GOD comfort the Thompson family and may he rest in eternal peace. To GOD be the GLORY!

  13. My heart aches to hear this news. I’m praying for everyone.
Mr. Thompson was one of my mentors and heroes when I attended Benedict College in Columbia, SC. His easy easygoing and calm demeanor always assured me that whatever I was going through eventually I would be alright. Both he and his wife were my father and mother away from home. A person that departs from this earth never truly leaves, for they are still alive …
To the entire Thompson family your father will be terribly missed. He was loved by all of us, and he will be truly missed by all of us. …
Flowers and prayers go to Mr. Thompson who epitomizes the meaning of a true Man of Character, May He Rest in Peace until we meet again. Karen and George Worsley, Somerset, New Jersey

  17. Thinking of & remembering Mr. James Francis Thompson as a man of conscience, character & class for those in his community., his church & certainly his family.

I became friends with Mr. Thompson as a young teacher at CA Johnson HS who parked on “his” side of Barhamville Rd.
After we got past that feat, we became fast friends who shared conversation about the school & the surrounding community, almost daily. Admittedly, I would look forward to our conversations as I would leave feeling inspired & ready to try another day in the classroom with my charges.

The other good thing about the end of my day was when I would exit the school on the Chestnut St. side. & would share a similar conversation on the porch with Mrs. Sara M. Rearden
Was I ever blessed to have two wisdom-filled, God-fearing, & caring community members to talk with & encourage me regularly about everything under the sun, but mostly about “our children” & their education. What wonderful memories I shall carry in my heart of hearts forever.

The caveat to this reflection of Mr. Thompson, however, was indeed when I learned that he was a 1939 graduate of the Historic Booker T. Washington HS, my alma mater also.

Finally, it is worth saying that we shall miss him from these mundane shores after a life of longevity, but we will rejoice in knowing that he shall now abide eternally, with his Lord & Savior!
