The journey of James Hershal Bassard began on March 3, 1932, and continued for 89 years.  He was born in Columbia, SC, to John and Gladys Butler Bassard.  He departed this life on Friday, November 19, 2021.

He attended Booker T. Washington High School. He continued his education at both South Carolina State University and Benedict College.

Later, he joined the United States Air Force, and while stationed in Bermuda, he met his late wife, Winifred Leola Darrell Bassard. His career continued after the Air Force, as a surgical technician with the V. A. Hospital, from which he retired. James’ career experiences also included working several years with United Event Staffing.

James and Leola became members of Saint Martin de Porres Catholic Church, where he became a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a founding member of the Knights of Columbus. James also was a founding member of the Townsmen Club.

James enjoyed bowling, golfing, flying airplanes, and was very proud of his saltwater and freshwater aquariums. One of his most enjoyable moments was playing and interacting with his grandchildren. He touched the lives of many, and took great pride in his daughter, son, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews for their accomplishments.

Mr. James Hershal Bassard leaves to cherish his memory: his daughter, Cindi R. Bassard of Columbia, South Carolina; son, Kenneth (Carol) Darrell, of Cornelius, North Carolina; brother, Alphonso (Lavern) Bassard, of Columbia, SC; sister, Phyllis Bassard Hutchinson, of Elgin, South Carolina; granddaughter, Briana Hence, of Columbia, SC; two great-grandsons, Walter and Gary Hence; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends, all of whom will miss him.
