  11. To: Alexzena & the Furgess
    household;

    As you & your family prepare for the service of youtr husband and life partner, please know that the Edgewood Community will miss one who was dedicated to making lives
    better through the many ways
    in which he served.

    His passion for getting things done is well documented in his work at the Post office, as a supervisor. and in his work of interest at the Transit System serving on the board for many years and his beloved Allen University where it was a given that he brought in “pennies from heaven” for their annual fund raising events because he cared enough to give his very best!

    His labor was committed to causes that improved, enhanced and made life bettet for his fellowman.

    So as he transcends this earthly journey for an eternal life with a loving Father, a scripture in Matthew speaks of his 80 plus years as , ” Blessed indeed “says the Spirit that they may rest from their labor, for their deeds follow them!”

    Rest in peace and power!
    John Furgess, Sr.

  12. Dearest Alexzena and family,
    You have our sincere condolences. Just saw the notice. I happen to be on face book and saw the death notice of John. It saddened me so much, because I knew how much John meant to Gene (dec’d 2023). I feel they are together now. May God keep you wrapped in his Loving Arms. You will always be in my prayers.

  21. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Alexzena and the Furgess Family from the residents of the Jones-McDonald Neighborhood Assn and Edgewood Community. We will miss Mr. Furgess’ daily presence in his yard (his pride and joy), seeing him AND his green truck–often with HUGH signs on the back or the sides during Election season ride pass, his strong VOICE of support for Allen University at community meetings and the many signatures he gathered on petitions for change and social justice. I hear that he might have worked harder as a Community Leader than he did when he was employed by the Post Office years ago. He certainly got your attention when he spoke and made an impact on so many lives along his life’s journey. Rest in Peace, Brother Furgess. God’s got an assignment he wants you to handle up above.

  52. I worked with Mr. Furgess for 12 years for the good of Columbia with The Comet bus service. He was on the Comet board, and I was president of the Midlands Transit Riders Association. He was a staunch advocate for better bus service in Columbia. Without his leadership, there wouldn’t have been several routes established in the area. He also worked to get half-priced bus fares for senior citizens and the disabled. Even though sometimes we had our differences on some things, we worked together for the good of our community. I will miss him. God bless the family during this time and in the days ahead.
