  1. Met him twice and idk if it was his generosity, his sincere interest in conversing with me or his BBQ but one thing I do know is he left an impact on me that’ll forever be with me. So sad to hear he’s gone.

  2. I was a foster child that lived in the home next to Mr. Gray for years. I would always hear him playing his African drums throughout the day and hear him speaking to my foster mother about the books he wrote. As a grown man now, I think he influenced me subconsciously to see the innerworkings of the world as I do now, which I’m proud of. Reading other comments I never knew how far his influence reached until now.

  33. I met Kevin twice and talked to him on the phone twice, and read Waiting for Lightning to Strike. I encountered him as a kindness and an anger, in the best sense, a warrior brave enough to never fetishize the battle. I’m so sad he’s gone, too soon. It’s always too soon for souls as courageous as his. My condolences to all who loved him, and all the rest of us who knew him in passing and were grateful for his wisdom.

My most fondest memories will be the day I flew around the state with presidential candidate jessie at Kevin’s invite and traveling with him to Atlanta Georgia to see Nelson Mandela. If there ever such a thing as a Renaissance man then that person would have to be Kevin. It is just hard to even think that want even be here any more. This is very tough.

  55. I am very saddened to hear of Kevin’s passing. Please except my sincere condolences to his family. I met Kevin when we were in the 4th grade at Fairforest Elementary. We were acquaintances throughout our school years. When we graduated, I joined the military and Kevin went to college. After spending 4 years in the Army, I left and joined the Army Reserves. Kevin was an officer in the same unit. My first drill in the Reserves I was very happy to see Kevin. I was an enlisted Soldier, the culture shock from active duty and Reserve’s was a bit much. During lunch on my first day, I went to the First Sergeant to say this was not for me. Keven was within earshot of me talking and he pulled me aside and convinced me to give it a longer try. I took his expert advice and wound up retiring with 32 years of military service. Kevin was instrumental in my career in the military. I just told Susie we wouldn’t be where we are without Kevin Gray’s mentorship. 65 years of life is too short. I will always and forever remember this man as my friend. God Bless him and his family.

  81. Man, this one’s a sad one. Kevin and I met when we served together at Co. C, 391st Engineers in Spartanburg in the early to mid 1980s…could that be 40 years ago? I guess it was. Kevin was quite a good officer. As good as I ever served with. Very talented. Tremendous leader.
I was commander of the unit and Kevin was my second in command, my XO. Together with the NCOs of the unit we worked and over our three years Co. C was awarded the Ischner Award for the number one Company grade reserve unit in the Army Reserves nation wide. Kevin’s leadership, knowledge, communication abilities, and loyalty were indispensable. We both exited the USAR around the same time and lost track of each other.
Next time I see Kevin he was labeling himself activist and was shinnying up the flag pole at the state house pulling down the confederate battle flag! I couldn’t help but smile at his audacity! Made me proud.
I then lost track of him again for a number of years until I saw a press release and was able to hear him make a talk and be on a panel discussion at Francis Marion U on MLK day, about 2019. After his talk I was able to buy several of his books and have a short conversation reminiscing of our time in the USAR together. Also gave us the opportunity to keep up on FB which allowed me to follow his break out into the restaurant business.
I was able to visit him there twice and was able to tell him I was glad I didn’t have to lie about how good the BBQ was, which made him chuckle. AND of course, we talked of our USAR times and he charmed my wife mightily!
The CO of a military unit is not generally supposed to outlive the XO. Makes me sad. But I am grateful to have been able to claim Kevin as my comrade in arms and in life and to call you my friend. Rest in peace LT.

  107. Our deepest sympathy and condolences to Kevin Gray’s family! I visited his Railroad BBQ restaurant about two years ago and had an extended conversation with Kevin. Very insightful and extremely knowledgeable about Columbia’s Black communities, Black leadership and politics in general. We will miss Kevin in many ways! RIP Brother!

  112. My deepest condolences and prayers to the family Kevin Gray. I remember meeting and working with him on the 1988 Jesse Jackson campaign. Bro. Gray had a huge influence and impact on my life after dropping out of high school and then going on to finish college. Working alongside of him in this historic campaign, signified to me at the time, “I am somebody,” as Jesse said profoundly. Will miss the warrior spirit of this brother. May his spirit live on as an ancestor!!!

  117. Absolutely stunned by this loss. Kevin was a longtime friend and news source. I got to know him during Jesse Jackson’s presidential campaign in 1988 and called on him many times for his takes on issues affecting the Black community. We also shared musical heroes. And when he opened his BBQ restaurant, I brought him a “Take It Down” bumper sticker from the Confederate flag fight. He was a real voice for those not heard. Rest well, my friend.
