  5. To Uncle Bert, thank you! For a man who did so much for the entertainment and religious worlds, you were always there when I needed you. When I was able go with you to help with jobs, I was so proud of how people treated you with utmost respect. I remember when Zapp wanted to take you to work with them on the road, but your commitment to others was so strong. Your hard work was never for self, but lifted everyone else around you. I was so lucky to meet so many artists because of you. Even after I left Columbia, I always knew I could call you and you were right there. Even though your body is not here, I know that you will continue to be there when I need you. Last time I saw you was Father’s Day 2021 and glad to tell you what you mean to me. I will always love you, Uncle Bert.

Barnet a man of his words, he had provided sound for our group: the Columbia Mass Choir concerts in Columbia, SC. I was able to experience during live sound with him and at Friendship where he played and sung.

Just continue to let God be your guide and keep the faith, family. Remember we have “come this far by faith.”

  14. To the entire Barnett Family:
Growing up in the Columbia community during the seventies & eighties in particular, meant that you were exposed to the “musical genius ” of Bert Barnett, both on the rhythm & blues (secular) side and the liturgical side of which he excelled in both.
His skills instrumentally were not outdone by his deep, deep baritone crooning that he was known for in the clubs and in church choir at Friendship Baptist where he parlayed his talents frequently.

Beyond that, he became well known as a mechanic of music as he honed his skills with sound systems, particularly for churches as he did for First Nazareth BC on occasions.

His skills, talents and “claim to fame” as a well balanced musician across the decades will be forever documented by the musicians he performed with for many years. Additionally, those of us who experienced the Bert Barnett sound in church or on the secular stage will long remember and maintain in our heart -of hearts, the musical genius of a Wilbert “Bert” Barnett into perpetuity. Amen!

May his family and those who admired his talents remember the stellar legacy he left with all of us.

In this life, Christ endured a Crown of thorns so that “we could receive a Crown of Glory!”
Bert Barnett is now in the number.

    To God be the Glory!

  34. Dear Lois and Family,

May the God of all comfort and the Father of mercies, comfort you and Bert’s family and friends in your bereavement for your dearly beloved, Wilbert “Bert” Barnett.
Please know, we have an empathetic redeemer, Jesus Christ, who suffered for us and is acquainted with your grief.
And just as His suffering for us abounds, so also, your comfort through Him abounds.

Our acquaintance with Bert began in elementary school. My husband, Sherman, and Bert were classmates. And on a few occasions, in their teen years, Sherman performed along with Bert on his Soul Aces band, filling in for the band’s trumpet player.

And though, not my classmate, but my elementary schoolmate, I always saw Bert being a nice, friendly and good mannerly tall boy!

One year at the school, students in various grades were brought together to perform plays and other performances on stage.
I had the awesome privilege of performing in a play on that day with the older schoolmates! Later on the stage, “older student” Bert played his musical instrument!

Bert’s daddy, Mr. Barnett, who was well known for his involvement in his children’s lives and talents, was seen unloading and loading an instrument, in his vehicle at the school, on that day. Mr. Barnett was a friendly, fatherly man.
And when we stopped by and visited Bert, when we saw him in his yard, several months ago, his demeanor and mannerisms,
and tone and tenor reminded me of his Dad’s from our early school days! And Bert’s schoolboy nice, friendly, good mannerly, nature, likened to his daddy’s demeanor, was still there! The fruit didn’t fall too far from the tree.

May your fond and loving memories, with and of Bert, serve to bring joy to your hearts and soul in the days ahead.

    With loving compassion,
    Sherman & Charlyce Goodwin

  35. It is with deepest and heartfelt sorrow to acknowledge the loss of my best friend and my brother from another mother, Wilbert”Bert” Barnett. To Lois, and the entire Barnett family, we will always love you guys. It is hard for me to accept the fact, but God knows best.
I have so many memories of Bert and the “The Soul Aces” band, including the time in 1971 when we performed on “Amateur Night” at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. Bert stole the show with his baritone voice when we played, “I Stand Accused”, by Isaac Hayes, also known as the Black Moses. Just by saying, “Pardon me, can I have a word with you,….” , we turned the the show upside down, and won first place. The prize was only $25, but we won! We were also invited to stay the rest of the week, but Mother Barnett said come home because we had to be at church on Sunday. But that is one memory and one night that I will NEVER EVER FORGET!
Bert was a super talented and tuff musician and could blow the reed off a baritone sax. I admired him so much, and was blessed to have had the honor and the opportunity to play with him in the “The Soul Aces” band. I am going to miss you dearly, Bert Barnett. You got your wings, so fly high! Good night my dear friend, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.”

  50. A Great Man Of God has got to receive his just reward. I have valued Bert as a classmate and acquaintance over the years since elementary school. We sang a duet there That resounds I. My mind to this day. See Him There The Zulu y, See Him There The Zulu Chief “. Even then he as tall and commanding with a rich and powerful deep voice. We
furthered our musical skills under Mr. James Pope at Perry then transferred to integrate. Dreher HS under Freedom of Choice.
Bert played a mean Baritone Sax while we marched in the HS band and as a participant in bands throughout the city. Despite the challenges associated with racism, we
.made a difference and helped to promote meaningful changes. God then used those experiences to train Bert to “HIS GLORY” . The Music Ministries and sound systems remain Tokens of “Service to of God and Mankind. Well done Warrior and Servant of God! 💙
