  1. I left Hopkins for Seattle, WA nearly 50 years ago. In my heart, long live people like Brother Willie Stevenson. He worked among many, but important to me, alongside my cousin Lucius ‘Sonny’ Anderson who was married to my cousin Louise Howell Anderson. Willie and Sonny were well-respected in the neighborhood. It was a joy to see the ‘brothers’ in the neighborhood, especially when they wore their uniforms. My condolences and love to Brother Willie’s family. If ever I visit ‘home’ again, I will certainly look up the family. Prayers and blessings to you and may you continue to lean on Him Who can/will give you strength and hope as you move forward.

  2. My condolences to the Stevenson Family. I knew of Mr. Stevenson wife first , Mrs Emma then I met him. He was one of the kindest man you could meet. It’s was months before I knew he was on a police force. He carried himself well. I pray that the family be comforted during this time.

  5. It was with deep sadness I receive the news of the passing of Captain Steve. In 1987 my introduction to the criminal justice profession came as a deputy assigned to the mighty Union shift headed by Captain Steve in the Richland County Sheriff Department. He was a great role model and leader and we all looked up to him. Captain Steve made it a personal mission that each one of us would succeed. As the first Black Captain in the department he had a tremendous responsibility on his shoulders. He carried it well beyond expectation. Captain Steve was the epitome of what every law enforcement officer should strive to be. He served and carried out his job with dignity, honesty, integrity, wisdom, professionalism , courtesy and compassion. Regardless of whom he was dealing with or the circumstances of the hour, that was Captain Steve. I have used the lessons he taught me throughout my professional career from hospital police director to College Professor . As I teach future police officers , probation officers and district attorneys; I try to instill in them some of the knowledge and values Captain Steve instilled in me some thirty years ago at the Richland County Sheriff Department. I give thanks to the Almighty God for his impact and influence on my life. Beyond professionalism, he made me a better Man. I join my former colleagues in saluting his memory. My Prayers goes out to his family in their loss. Captain Steve set the bar high. If we live each day trying to live up to the values and standards set by Captain Steve, he will never be forgotten. And his legacy will live on. Rest In Peace Captain Steve ; take your Heavenly Rest for an Earthly job well done.

Capt Willie Stevenson was my 1st supervisor. At the time, we did not know the valuable lessons that he was teaching. Not only did he make us better police officers but he made us better men. Capt Willie Stevenson was the Jackie Robinson of Richland County Sheriffs Department.

  21. Willie Stevenson. My Captain during my tenure as a patrol officer at the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. My friend for life. Captain Willie Stevenson was an exemplary example of a great man, a good person, and awesome supervisor. He lived the lessons he taught us. Only until I matured did I really understand his struggles and obstacles on the job. He never complained. I truly loved him and will definitely miss him. I was able to speak with him prior to his passing. I will always remember his gentle voice and smile.

  24. My heart is heavy with the loss of my friend. Captain Stevenson and my husband, Claude Stewart, met many years ago while working at Palmer Memorial Chapel, became fast friends and Captain Stevenson became part of our family. I will miss his loyalty, support, sense of humor and willingness to extend a hand whenever needed. I offer my sincere condolences to the family.

  25. Captain Stevenson was a devote Christian, Father, Grandfather and friends to countless people! In the 25 plus years I worked with him at Richland County, I never once saw him lose his temper and he always remained calm no matter the situation including when he was carjacked behind the Sheriff’s Department by two escaped Federal prisoners from the jail next door! His devoted service to the citizens of Richland County was impeccable! Rest in Peace Captain. May God give you peace and comfort during your darkest moments!
