Mrs. Dorothy Lula Veney Gaines was born in Sharps, Virginia to Wade and Lula Glascoe Veney. She departed this life on Thursday, July 29, 2021.
Dorothy accepted Jesus Christ at an early age, and was baptized at Ebenezer Baptist Church, in Sharps, Virginia. Dorothy attended the public schools of Richland County, in Warsaw, Virginia.
Dorothy married her high school sweetheart, the late Joseph Beal Gaines, and they moved to Paterson, New Jersey. She was a member of Serenity Baptist Church, in Paterson, New Jersey. Dorothy worked in the church diligently serving in numerous organizations. She was a member of the Rose of Sharon Eastern Star, of Newark, New Jersey.
Dorothy retired from Holy Name Hospital, in Teaneck, New Jersey, where she worked for many years as an EKG Technician. Upon her retirement, she relocated to Columbia, South Carolina. She joined The Potter’s Christian Life Center Church, in Columbia, where she was a faithful member.
Dorothy loved her family and the family gatherings with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She had the sweetest demeanor and kindest spirit. Everyone who knew her loved her. Dorothy loved visiting with her many friends locally and out of state on the telephone. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, gospel music, traveling, and her favorite book was the Bible.
She was predeceased by: her parents, Wade and Lula Glascoe Veney; her grandson, Jevele Jones; a sister, Rosie Monroe; a brother, Payton Veney; a brother-in-law, James Monroe; and a sister-in-law, Staggie Veney.
Mrs. Dorothy Lula Veney Gaines is survived by: her three loving children, Vivian (Otis) Taylor, of Blythewood, South Carolina, Joseph (Thomasenia) Gaines, of Sumter South Carolina, and Hazel Gaines, of Paterson, New Jersey; three affectionate grandchildren, Kewanna (Anthony) Ortiz, of Sumter, South Carolina, Otis R. Taylor Jr., of Oakland, California, and Brandon Taylor, of Columbia, South Carolina; three great-grandchildren, Bria Griffin, Kaylin Griffin, and Bryson Ortiz, all of Sumter, South Carolina; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends, all of whom will miss her dearly.
