Girtie Mae Caldwell was born on August 21, 1941 in St. Matthews, South Carolina. After an extended illness, she departed this life on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at Prisma Health Richland Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina.

Girtie was affectionally known as Nunki. She was the beloved daughter of the late Josh and Allie Lucas Noble. She was united in holy matrimony with the late Lawrence Caldwell.

Girtie received her education through the Calhoun County School System, and graduated in 1958 from John Ford High School. While attending high school, she loved playing basketball as the lead point guard. Girtie worked as an Operating Room Technician, at Richland Memorial Hospital for 20 years. She also worked at Sunshine Retirement Home in Beaufort, South Carolina, until she medically retired.

Girtie was preceded in death by: her husband, Lawrence Caldwell, Sr.; and son, John Anderson Lee, Jr.

Girtie was a faithful member of New Laurel Missionary Baptist Church, until her health started to decline.

Girtie had a witty sense of humor, but please don’t make “me come out my bag.” She loved Gospel Music and Family Feud hosted by Steve Harvey. Most importantly she loved, cherished, and was very protective of her children.

Those left to cherish the precious memory of Girtie are: 8 children, Janice (Ronald, Sr.) Weathers, of Lumberton, North Carolina, Annette (Wayne) Brown, of St. Matthews, South Carolina, Doris Nash, and Carroll Gaffney, all of Columbia, South Carolina, Bernard (Collette) Lee, of Norfolk, Virginia, George (Shawnti) Lee, of Jacksonville, Florida, Francina Lee, and Sophia Guida, of Columbia, South Carolina; one brother, Herbert (Catherine) Noble; one sister, Lillie B. Sims, of Brooklyn, New York; 24 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, and friends all of whom will miss her dearly. Let us rejoice as she is now at peace and we look forward to seeing her in the resurrection.

  9. Momma, you fought a valiant fight and our Lord and Savior has sounded his trumpet to let us know your angel wings have been presented. I will ALWAYS remember the talks, laughs but most of all your love and acceptance. Though my place setting may state – daughter in law; you ALWAYS treated me as if I was one of your own and I will always hold that dear in my heart. All my love.
