Mrs. Hattie Lee Burgess Martin Davis was born in Columbia, South Carolina. She was the youngest of five children born to Joseph and Carrie Burgess. She transitioned from her earthly life Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at her home.
Hattie was born in Columbia, SC, where she attended the public schools and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Allen University and her Master’s Degree in Education from South Carolina State University. Hattie did further studies at the University of South Carolina. After 33 years as an educator in Richland County School District One, she retired from Hyatt Park Elementary School.
Since early childhood, Hattie was an active member of Sidney Park C. M. E. Church. She was a member of the Missionary Society, Excelsior Club and the Maggie G. Boozer Scholarship Committee.
Lee, as she was fondly called by many of her friends, was a member of Richland County Teacher’s Association, National Education Association, Midlands Chapter of American Business Women Association, Allen University Local Alumni Club, Eva Trezvant Community Club, and Byrneswood Community Civic Organization. She received numerous awards and special recognitions for her dedicated service in religious and community endeavors.
Hattie was preceded in death by: her parents Joseph and Carrie Burgess, Benjamin Talmadge Martin, Sr.; a son, Joseph B. Martin; four siblings, Joseph Burgess, Cornelia Mangum, Abraham Burgess and Marietta Burgess; and husband, William “Bill” Davis, Sr.
Mrs. Hattie Lee Burgess Martin Davis leaves to remember her life and cherished memories: a son, Reverend Benjamin Talmadge (Dianne) Martin; stepson, William W. (Eloise) Davis, Jr.; stepdaughter, Fidel Fernandez; grandchildren, Edwin (Maria) Martin, Talmahjia (Sedrick) Sweat, Talmage (Nicole) Martin and Jhamie Martin; eight great-grandchildren, Sedrick Sweat, Jr., Taylor Sweat, Selena Martin, Edwin D. Martin, Dante Martin, Talmage Q. Martin, Mark Martin, and Chasity Boyd; five great-great-grandchildren; a niece, Valiada Smith; a nephew, Joseph B. Burgess III; several great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends, all of whom will miss her dearly.
