Ms. Harriett Ruth Williams transitioned into eternal rest on Friday, November 5, 2021. She was first to be born of seven children to the late Harry Williams and Dorothy Jackson Williams Alston, on Monday, January 1, 1951. Harriett perfected with spunk the role of the oldest and being the boss. Her charismatic personality and wit garnered her love and respect from all who knew her.
Educated in the Richland County Public School System, Harriett was a proud graduate of the Booker T. Washington, Class of 1969. Her dedication to the Black and Gold BTW Tornadoes extended after high school, with her serving in the capacity of Secretary and Treasurer of the alumni club.
Harriett’s professional career started and grew with the South Carolina Department of Mental Health. Throughout her years at Mental Health, she worked in several departments. In 2005, she retired as the Manager of Records, the department responsible for patient documents and information.
At an early age, Harriett gave her life to Christ. She grew up and attended Holy Spirit Lutheran Church and Gethsemane Lutheran Church. When she departed this life, she was a member of Second Calvary Baptist Church, where she sang for the Lord in the Choir.
In addition to her love of family and close friends, Harriett volunteered her time with the Mary B. Thomas Girls Youth Circle, where she mentored and tutored young ladies. A staple of 53 Lansing Circle, Harriett is adorned as Sister, Mother, Aunt, Cousin, and Friend. Her resilience and stoic presence, as well as her famous cornbread and sweet potato pies, will be missed. She will forever be our Harriett.
In addition to her parents, Harriett was preceded in death by: her son, Rodney Eric Williams; grandson, Duwan Erick Williams; and two brothers, Reginald Williams and Wendell Terry Williams.
Harriett is survived by: her brothers, Anthony Tony Williams, Elliott Williams, and Keith (Angela) Williams; sister, Beverly Lewis; sister-in-law, Catherine Williams; granddaughter, Logan Williams; great-grandson, Dez Malik Williams; goddaughter, Tavia (Bernarie) Gaddy; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, a best friend/sister, Carolyn M. Murphy, and a special friend, Bernace Murray; all of whom will miss her.

We love you but God loves you best…
As a graduate of the Historic Booker T. Washington H S, a year ahead of Harriett, I was friends with her & her clan, Diane W., the late Willa M. Bailey Richard M , “Bubby” & others.
We were all staunch members of the Marching 100 band & the Choraliers & Aeolians choirs.
Harriet was an excellent musician, bar none & took her craft seriously as section leader of the Bellyres.
After the closing of our beloved alma mater, we continued the tradition of the John W. Work Chorus presentation each year for over 40 years.
Harriet was always in the number with her rich alto voice filling the choir loft, keeping the rest of us in the right place on the music sheet & “singing our parts” correctly!
”
She really was a consumate musician, instrumentally & vocally. for all of the years she shared her gifts.
The final words of our alma mater are “Thy sons & daughters shall forever shine”
She is now shining in glory land for eternity!
On behalf of The John Works Choir we extend our condolences 🙏 to the family of Harriet Williams. Harriet was a very faithful member of the choir, she brought so much to the choir. We will miss her. R.I.P
