A Time To Be Born and A Time To Die
Jocelyn D. Harris was born on July 27, 1969, in Trenton, New Jersey, to Larry D. and Janie D. McQuilla Harris. She entered her heavenly eternal rest on Sunday, October 31, 2021, at her home in Columbia, South Carolina.
A Time To Be Educated
Jocelyn attended the parochial schools of Trenton, NJ, and graduated from McCorristin Catholic High School, in Hamilton, NJ, Class of 1987. She matriculated to Widener University, in Chester, Pennsylvania. Jocelyn graduated with honors in May of 1991, with a Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management. In 2019, she also obtained her Real Estate License for the State of South Carolina.
A Time To Build Up
At an early age, Jocelyn’s parents instilled in her a strong sense of faith. Her walk with Christ began at Beauty Grove Primitive Baptist Church, in Trenton, NJ. She actively participated in the Youth Department serving as a member of the Youth Choir and with the church Sunday School Department. She faithfully attended the annual National Primitive Baptist Convention, which was hosted in various states across the United States, reinforcing her love of travel to new and exciting places.
After relocating to Columbia, SC, where she purchased her first home, Jocelyn became a member of Bible Way of Atlas Road Church. She found her niche serving faithfully in the Media Ministry.
A Time To Labor
Jocelyn’s career started off utilizing her earned degree, when she became the kitchen manager at Red Lobster, in Lawrenceville, NJ, where she stayed until her move to South Carolina. She then was employed as the cafeteria manager at Blue Cross/Blue Shield for several years until she discovered her gift of salesmanship when she started at CARMAX as an entry level sales consultant. During her long tenure there, she attained and sustained Ultimate Level Status, which is a reflection of a superior auto sales person.
She truly enjoyed and loved her CARMAX family.
In her down time, Jocelyn developed her passion for baking THE most delicious cakes and making a bang-up banana pudding! Another pastime of hers was crocheting baby blankets and lap throws for her friends and family members.
Jocelyn had an infectious smile that was followed by a laugh that lifted the lowest of spirits whenever she was in the room. She impacted many lives with her love of Christ, life, travel, and family ties.
Jocelyn was preceded in death by: her maternal grandparents, Hosea and Janie McQuilla; and her paternal grandparents, Commodore and Eva Sanford Harris.
A Time To Celebrate
Jocelyn Danielle Harris leaves to cherish and celebrate her memory: her loving parents, Larry D. and Janie D. Harris, of Sumter, SC; one sister, Jacqueline D. Harris-Smith, of Las Vegas, NV; one brother, Julian D. Harris, of Sumter, SC; her nieces, Janasia, Jahara, and Zakiya Smith, and Zahria Harris; one great-niece, Leilah Smith; her nephews, Donovon, Daquan, and Devin Harris, and Drevon Smith; cousins like sisters, Ruby Simpson and Kimberly Teague; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, extended church and community family, colleagues, friends, and special friends, Michelle Walters, Paula Rolax, Beth Rolax-Morine, Kimberly Curls-Feagin, and Anthony Davis.
Jocelyn will always be remembered as a fearless protector of the underdog, a champion of laughter that filled the room, and a lover of Christ that was evident in the love and commitment crocheted into every item that was given. Her legacy of loyalty and dedication to hard, honest work will be carried on by those who loved and knew her best.
She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. – Proverbs 31: 25 (NLT)
My prayers are with the family at this very difficult time. We go through this life, we have Faith and trust God, we prepare… yet Never are we truly ready to experience this type of loss. May God wrap his loving arms around you all… praying for understanding, peace and the love of family as you love, encourage and support one another.
