Mother Maggie Lou Pitts was born July 1, 1919 in Rembert, South Carolina.  She was the beloved daughter of the late James and Maggie Hickman Chambers.  She departed this life on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, at the Rice Estates Nursing Home.

Mother Pitts, affectionately known as Sam Pitts, attended grade school in Sumter County, South Carolina.  She married her first husband, Nelson English, at the age of thirteen in order to rear her youngest brother. After Nelson’s death, she married the love of her life, Hurley Monkey Pitts.  Maggie worked as a baker and cook at Cornell Arms.  She also worked as a nanny and maid to some prominent judges and lawyers. Sam enjoyed baking, cooking, and watching sports.  She opened her heart and home to many. Sam was a beautiful person, who loved to laugh, joke, and keep it real.

Mother Pitts was a member of Bible Way Church of Atlas Road, where she was appointed Mother by the late Bishop Andrew C. Jackson.  Mother Pitts was a humble and strong woman, who worked diligently to raise her family firmly in faith.

Sam Pitts was the second oldest of 13 children, all of whom preceded her in death.  She was the mother of three children, who also preceded her in death, Nelson English, Sr., Sarah English, and Harry English, Sr. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, six grandsons, and two great-grand sons.

“My child, never forget the things I have taught you.  Store my commands in your heart.  If you do this, you will live many years, and your life will be satisfying.”    – Proverbs 3: 1-2

Mother Maggie Lou Pitts leaves to cherish her precious memory: three daughters, Dorothy English, of Columbia, SC, Maggie Hancock, of Hattisburg, MS, and Betty (Robbie) Mouzon, of Columbia, SC; one son, Robert Lee Pitts, Sr., of Columbia, SC; two daughters-in-law, Wilhemena English, of Columbia, SC and Mammie English, of Sumter, SC; reared like a daughter, Charlette Hancock-Brown, of Columbia, SC; thirty-eight granchildren; eighty-three great-grandchildren; seventy-six great-great-grandchildren; two great-great-great-grandchidren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives, and dear friends, all of whom will miss her dearly.
