Mary Omega Coit was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on November 9, 2021.

On April 1st, 1924, to the late Luther and Marie Smith in Latta, South Carolina, Mary O. Coit was born. She was the fourth out of six siblings. She was raised in Rains, South Carolina in Marion County and educated in Marion County Public schools. She married the late Robert Coit and from this union brought 7 children.

Mary found the love of Christ early and submitted her life to Him at an early age. Her life was lived by showing the love of Christ through the way she lived her life. She successfully maintained her home-based child care center where she would love and care for babies, whom she stayed in contact with through their adulthood. In 1976 Mary’s love for Christ, children and the desire to do the Lord’s will extended on to her teaching Sunday school to tender age children. The importance of children receiving a solid foundation of knowledge about the Lord Jesus Christ was vital to her.  Mary was known in her home church Ridgewood Missionary Baptist Church, not only as being the Mother of the church but also affectionately known for her Rice Krispy treats that she would have available each Sunday after church.

Mary’s laughter and love was infectious, her smile would illuminate any room. She had a cherished and loving relationship with her younger sister LulaMae Smith.  From the moment you would meet her you already loved her and knew she loved you. She spent her life spreading and sharing the love of Jesus Christ. She always had the right bible verse to share to help lift anyone’s spirit, or a homemade remedy to cure any ailment.

Mary was preceded in death by: Her father and mother Luther and Marie Smith, her sons Jimmy Coit(Alice), Robert Coit, Jr.(Lorraine), and Edward J. Coit(Mary). Her daughter Rose Marie Coit, daughter-in-law Cynthia Coit, her sisters, Carrie Smith and Louise Brigman, her brothers James Smith and Hill Burnett, and great-grandson Khaleal Coit.

Mary leaves behind to cherish her memory, her sister LulaMae Smith, her sons, Joseph D. Coit, Luther Coit(Alberta), and her son and pastor, Fred W. Coit. Her nieces and nephews, Ruby Lee Smith, Willam Smith(James Jr.), Peter C. Smith, Carolyn Smith-Cherry, Rufus Smith Jr, Betty Jean Smith, Ulysses Smith, Bobby Lee Smith, Doris Smith, and Grace Smith. Her Grandchildren, Shamael Coit, Korey Coit, Allison Coit, Jessica Coit, Luther Coit, Jr (Boonie), Jaclyn Laminack-Cook, Allen Laminack, Chris Penn, Delon Lewis, Marcus Lewis, Trevor Coit, Jezreel Coit, David Coit, (Robert)Bobby Coit, Ernest Coit, and Edward Coit Jr. Great-Grandchildren, Amiya Barnes (Pee-Pie), Makaila Coit, Rashad Coit, Kayla Coit, Megan Coit, Macy Coit, Chloe Coit, Paris Coit, and Connor Coit.  Breanna Cook, AJ Cook, Brittany, Brianna, Amber, Davia, David Coit, Jr, Kaleb, and Kendra; a host of great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and special friends all of whom will miss her.

  6. To the Coit family and RMBC family, I pray for the Comforter. As we go through this difficult time and see only one set of footprints, know that God is carrying us. We all have precious memories. I remember when Mother Coit would come in ( after church started) Mother Coit would be waving with her beautiful smile. Pastor Coit with his loving smile would just say “senior privilege”. I always remember she said “its not hard being a Christian, read your bible and do what it says” Mother Coit your words are powerful. I know you are in Gods care. That gives me comfort. I pray we all be comfort.

  9. Our prayers of condolences for the God of all comfort, to comfort and give peace to dear Mrs. Mary O. Coit’s family, as you mourn her earthly separation from you.
May you be comforted by your memories of her dedication and loving kindness for her family, which was so dear to her.

Mrs. Coit will be also be remembered for her dedication in teaching many little ones in her Sunday School classes over the years..
In one of our conversations she shared that the taught the children because she “did not want their blood on [her] hands!” She genuinely cared about their souls and salvation.

Indeed, Mrs. Coit’s life displayed obedience, honor and love for our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, the filling of the Holy Spirit in her life, and the fruit of the Spirit: “love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” She was a good model for us of how a Spirit filled Christian and a Godly woman should look and live.

She demonstrated to us what a good and faithful servant looks like.

Mother Mary O. Coit’s life of faithfulness, dedication and love for our Lord; her warmth, wisdom, and care for others are to be emulated.

  10. A long time ago Mrs. Coit cared for my baby but little did I know she was caring for me as well. She ministered and encouraged me and I found that GOD placed her there for me as she took my mother’s place who had fallen ill. I will always love her and praise GOD for her presence in my life.

I loved when I went to Bible study & come in the side door to see her sitting there put a smile on my face. Her sweet soft voice but prayed a powerful prayer. She will be greatly missed at RMBC.

  27. Mother Coit certainty will be missed When I started bringing Conner ,RG and Synthia to church they would always ask if Mother Coit and Deaconess Williams were going to teach them their Sunday school lesson. They became so attached that as they grew older they didn’t want to transition to the next class, oh and those rice crispy treats, they were always readily available for the children. They knew that if Mother Coit was at church, they could always count on those rice crispy treats being right there in her bag! Our prayers are with the family.
