Mr. Bernard Hunter was born May 16, 1952, in Columbia, South Carolina. He was the son of Retired Sgt. Eugene Hunter and Mary Alice Reese Hunter. On Friday, May 14, 2021, Bernard passed from life to eternity to be with his beloved Stine. Bernard graduated from W. J. Keenan High School, Class of 1972, where he excelled in football. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, and married his high school sweetheart, Earnestine Woodard, on May 24, 1975. Together, they cherished and raised two devoted children: a son, Jarvis, and a daughter, Alicia. As an army drill sergeant, Bernard toured Germany and Saudia Arabia, until his retirement from the Army on November 1, 1993. He was a member of Jones Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church. Bernard and Earnestine made a welcoming home in Columbia, South Carolina, for all family and friends. They never turned anyone away and would feed, entertain, and nurture every single soul who came to the door. While Stine cooked food for the soul, Bernie was the life of the party. His love, laughter, and boisterous voice made everyone feel loved and at home. One of his favorite ways to shower Stine with love was to pull her from the kitchen to dance. Bernard made friends everywhere he went. He was the most generous person. Affectionally called Bernie or Uncle Bernie by many, his vivacious spirit and energy will be truly missed. He was preceded in death by: his parents; his devoted wife, Earnestine; a brother, Paulrick Hunter; stepmom, Pauline Hunter; and brothers-in-law, Robert Butch Jackson and Joseph Richardson. Mr. Bernard Hunter leaves to cherish his loving and spirited memory: his son and daughter, Jarvis O. (Joquanna) Hunter and Alicia D. Hunter (Ramero) Evans, both of Columbia, SC; four grandsons, Chase Evans, Josiah Hunter, JaQuan Bullock, and Jamari Carmichael, all of Columbia, SC; four brothers, James, Larry (Crystal), Perry, and Alexander (Cheryl), all of Columbia, SC; his sister, Eugenia Daniels, of Columbia, SC; one granddaughter of the heart, Aminah Anderson, of Columbia, SC; his brother-in-law, James (Doretha) Woodard, of Jonesboro, GA, along with a host of other relatives and caring friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.

  1. Hadn’t seen Bernard since Fairwold Jr. High School but always had deep love and respect for him. He was a good friend to me when my self esteem was low. I regret not seeing him before he went home but I know I’ll see him again. I wish much love and comfort to the family. He was a great guy!@
