My sincere condolences to you and your family on the loss of your husband. I met you all through the Columbia Branch NAACP, but got to know you better through Miriam Kennedy, as you all were such dear and loyal friends and supporters of Miriam. May you always look to God, for he will give you peace. My prayers are with you as you navigate this new normal.

    Jr. . .

My heart breaks for you in the loss of your loved one, Louis Weldon Hammond.

We grew up in Aiken, where our families shared a close relationship as well as being family-connected and his sister, Alexis, was my special friend.
Weldon was a kind-hearted, congenial & gifted person, with an appealing sense of humor! His skills included literally saving me as a youth lifeguard teaching swimming lessons.

Later in life, I had such admiration for the beautiful bond between Loretta & Weldon, which surely set the tone for a nurturing family life.

My love and condolences are being sent as I invoke the Lord’s grace upon you in consolation throughout your healing!

    Love you dearly,

  14. In 1959 I was a student at Clark Atlanta University. I took a biology and history course at the summer school session at SC State College and I met Weldon Hammond and George Anderson in the history course taught by Professor Sanderford. Weldon and I would not see each other for another eight years. I attended Howard University School of Law and he attended SC State School of Law. Weldon’s father-in-law, Dr. Charles Thomas, offered me the position of Executive Director of the SC Voter Education Project. I became very close to Loretta and the entire Thomas family.

Weldon did a super job as an adjudicator with the Veteran Administration Regional Office. In the latter years of our lives we served on the Columbia Branch NAACP Executive Committee.

I shall keep the family in my prayers.

  20. Aiken, SC, was my second home during my youth, and I have many fond memories of my time there. I considered the Hammond family as my extended family.

I attended Aiken Graded School in the second grade, where Weldon’s mother, Mrs. Flossie Hammond, was my teacher. I have often shared how much care Mrs. Hammond took with me as her “transplanted” student from Florida. She was truly a jewel.

I signed up for Weldon’s swimming class at the community pool near Aiken Graded School as a youngster. Although swimming was sometimes a scary experience for me, Weldon helped ease my fears and taught me how to swim. I am thankful for that summer when I learned to swim, as it made me prioritize teaching my sons (I have no daughters) how to swim.

I have followed Weldon from afar, and sometimes our paths would cross distantly. Though I have not seen him in years, I still consider Weldon and Alexis dear friends.

I want to extend my heartfelt sympathy, prayers, and love to Weldon’s family. He made a significant difference during his time on this earthly plane. I thank God for him.

  44. My Dear Loretta

As longtime colleagues in Education, NAACP, Church affairs, & just good ole friends over the years, I am extending
my fondest love & care for you & the family at a time such as this.
I say this as I reflect on the manner in which the two of you so lovingly surrounded me as I
went through my challenges with my beloved twin sister, Miriam, 11 years ago as
    of January.
How fast times moves forward, but memories of our loved ones remain deeply imbedded as they are never forgotten.

While you are remembering the life and love that I know was shared with your dear Weldon,
may your memories serve as a beacon of support that will undergurd you and give you and your family pleasant & loving thoughts often, as you move forward beyond this period of bereavement.

The joy of having the “love of your life” for all of the years you shared, will now be imbedded in the deep recesses
of your mind, body and soul!

Giving our loving Savior the glory for allowing you a life with the “man of your dreams who carried you in his soul.”

The late Sarah Vaughn said it succintly as she ended a song with- “I’ll Close My Eyes And See You In My Heart!”

May you continue to abide in the goodness of Jesus.
