  1. Since learning of Doris’s passing, it has taken weeks for me to recover from the shock and accept the reality of this terrible loss. Today, as we celebrate the federal holiday of Juneteeth and the Great Emancipation, I thought to myself, “What better time than today for me to celebrate and pay homage to one who quietly, positively, and exponentially influenced and liberated so many young minds?” During the very early years in which I knew her, I never even once remember her saying or doing anything hurtful or demeaning to others. Doris personified the humility and human kindness of the truly great. My love goes out to I. S., their sons, their grandchildren, and all who were so blessed to have known and loved her.

  2. Dear George –

My deepest condolences on the passing of your mother. I never got to meet her, but I know she raised a brilliant son. I am forever grateful that you were my lawyer back in 2011. I hope you and your family have many good memories to comfort you.

    Sincerely,

  3. A remarkable and blessed life. Her dedication to family and community stands as an example to be honored and a goal to be emulated. My memory of Doris starts with her husband’s entry into public life in 1970 and closes with my departure from Columbia in 1979. That warm memory has not faded with the passing of many years. I, in the company of my lifelong friend Melissa, offer our prayers in the comfort of knowing they we will be received by her Redeemer.

I remained in awe of her commitment to constantly make sure the comma, the napkin and the grace was always in the right place. We shared so many special moments over the years that I will forever cherish. Until this day, if I want to wow the crowd, I pull out one of my Doris Johnson recipes and I’m always spot on. I’m most proud of the fact that my nine year older recently got to learn etiquette from Mrs. Johnson. Blaize will boldly brag that Ian’s Grandmother helped him finally remember which side of the plate to place his silverware. I thank God that Benedict brought us together and consider it a huge honor to call Mrs. Johnson my friend. Family – thank you for sharing her brilliance with us. We are all better for it.

We never forget our first contact with people . Mine with Doris was her being the first female to warmly extend her welcome to me being new in Columbia in the mid 70’s by taking me to lunch . At that time & at all times as l came to know her, Doris was a lady who displayed the epitome of class & professionalism in how she carried herself in representing her family and her community. Doris, your kind spirit and your enduring smile will be missed. I will always remember the way you welcomed me and my late husband, Reverend John H Richardson into your home at all of the Class of 1960 C.A. Johnson High School functions that you and and I.S. Leevy Johnson would host. We always felt like family; not merely classmates. Your kind heart and gentle spirt will be missed, but never forgotten. You meant so much to so many. But, I wanted to let you know that you where so very dear to me, my late husband, and my sons (Vernon and Michael). You were a true solider in the faith and you fought the good fight until the end. You are missed my dear sister, but always remembered. I love you and miss you Doris. Take your rest now and be at peace with God, the Father, Jesus, the Son, and the host on Holy Angels.

She always had such compassion for all whom she encountered. Another soldier gone home! She truly let her works be her testimony. She was a genuine soul. What a beautiful servant inside and out. She was a true example of letting her life speak for herself. “Absent from the body is present with the Lord!” You have my condolence and unconditional “LOVE” which Doris showered us with everywhere she went. 116. Love letter to my teacher, Miss Wright (Mrs. Leevy-Johnson),
It was a DIVINE appointment that you came in my life. I being a middle school student at W.A. Perry Middle trying to find my way through adolescence, you became my role model/teacher and was so positive through those stormy times. While I was a student at Booker T. Washington High School, to my great joy you were sent to be a teacher/guidance counselor. You were always willing to assist any student in need – just like my mother, Lilease Hall (Madame Hall). You had the unique combination of being beautiful on the outside, as well as, being beautiful on the inside. Your charm, grace, and kindness made an indelible impact on my life! As years passed, I would occasionally see you at events. You always recognized or found me – just to talk and to offer constant encouragement. God blessed us with a wonderful friendship. I will truly miss you and carry you in my heart. Thank you and love you to the end of time!
