  3. RIP my brother. I met Leroy in the early 70’s at the University of South Carolina. He lived with us in Maxcy College. He was there only one year but made an impression on all of us.

We kept in touch for several years, but went separate ways over time.

    God bless the Dunlap family.

  4. My condolences Sophie to you and your children and family. The separation is hard but time really will make it bareable. It was my pleasure to serve with Dunlap in Baumholer GE, it was my first assignment in which I collected a number of friends I now consider family. I never knew how to play penuckel or bid wist, but I was a cheerleader. I never got how something like a game of cards could monopolize your time so much you would skip meals for it! There were good times there.
Thank you for sharing him with us. He will be missed I am confident in this. Rest well Sirđź’—đź’ž You have earned it.

  8. My condolences to the Dunlap family. As I’ve read the guest book comments, the same words reappear: integrity, fair, honest, straightforward, knowledgeable. Those are the things that imprinted on me as a young soldier – a young man – that have shaped my career for almost 40 years.

CSM Dunlap created the motto “A Tradition of Excellence” for the 215th FSU while at Ft Benning. This boldly set the expectations and he motivated people to deliver. He’d teach you how to think, challenge you to reach a goal, and use a little time in the “I Love Me, You, or First Sergeant” platoon for course correction, if needed.

The saying “old Soldiers never die, they just fade away” may be incorrect in this regard since I tell my friends and coworkers a “Daddy D” story almost weekly! May also slip in a “I guarantee” or “If I tell you blackberries in the morning, you better bring a bucket.”

So instead, for my mentor, gone but never forgotten.

  9. To Mrs. Dunlap and Family,

Please accept my deepest condolences. Mr. Dunlap was an exceptional man, a leader and a mentor to many. He possessed a heart of gold and profoundly impacted the lives of numerous individuals.

I had the privilege of working for Mr. Dunlap for six years, and our professional relationship continued until June 2. During that time, we formed a team that will never be duplicated. Under his guidance, we became the premier power projection platform in the Army. We managed the Soldier Readiness Processing Center with unparalleled efficiency, establishing standards that remain unmatched for processing soldiers for deployment.

As a mentor, he was exemplary. I could always rely on him for sound advice. We often spent hours beneath the tree at Mower Processing Center discussing strategy and personnel. He would often remark, “Now you are thinking like me.” He was known for his honesty and straightforwardness, qualities I greatly admired. I will sincerely miss our phone conversations.

He will be missed by many.

  16. I met CSM Dunlap as a young Specialist and I was terrified of asking for his help for my upcoming assignment. But after that first conversation, I learned he had a caring heart, he listened and tried to help.

When I returned to serve under his leadership again, as a Sergeant, I was not scared. When I was called to his office as a young Staff Sergeant and told I was going to be part of his “Dream Time” I was terrified once again.

I knew him better, understood his thinking and expectations and I just did not think I could work for him directly. In my first “official” meeting, he told me I was good, but I needed to be better to fill the role he had for me. I left his office with a list of regulations I had to read for both Finance and Personnel and given what I thought was a ridiculously short time to learn those humungous volumes. The fact he said he was going to test me, was a challenge I couldn’t pass up.

I read, learned, took notes and I passed his test. I left his office in awe. I had to use my notes on the personnel side and he had nothing but his brain. And I learned even more that day, I had to be better and know more to work for him.

He was tough, demanding, supportive, challenging, and winning a “good job” from him was like hanging the moon. I learned a lot as a Soldier, a contractor and a civilian. He was my mentor, friend, and “Daddy Dunlap” to those of us not afraid to claim him for all he did to make us better.

My heart aches, and I regret delaying my visit to see him. My deepest condolences to a family he loved and supported him through all his life. Wishing you all comfort, prayers, and holding you in my thoughts as you navigate this difficult time.

He said, “Why me Lord?” with him, I learned that blessings are not a reward for perfection, but a reflection of unconditional love. Humble acceptance, acknowledging that we receive far more than we deserve.

    He will be missed.

  34. Mr. Dunlap was my favorite boss ever. Strict but always fair…and gentle when he needed to be. “STICK AND MOVE” will forever be part of my mindset when life gets hectic. He was my light in the dark when my life was being especially cruel. Always a trusted confidant and trusted leader. The world is a better place because he was in it. YOU WILL ALWAYS BE MISSED!!

  35. My deepest condolences to the family and other loved ones of Leroy R. Dunlap. I worked for you in and out of uniform and one thing for sure…it was never a dull moment. I recall how you laughed so when I informed you that many that grew up under your authority referred to it as the “Dunlap Regime.” 🫶🏽 First came the laughter, then pride as I named off names that reached equal or higher levels of command. R.I.P. Mr. Dunlap, your watch is now over.
