  1. My sincerest condolences to Calvin, Amber, Brooke. …And to Wanda Andrews. Whenever I think of Bertha I immediately think of Wanda (and vice versa). They had such a close friendship. I’m just learning of Bertha’s passing today. She was truly an inspiration to the Shaw A.F.B and Sumter communities. A very beautiful and very kind person that I am blessed to have known. May God bring His peace to the family and loved ones.

  12. I have enjoyed an almost 35-year relationship with my best friend, Bertha. She was a huge part of my life and my family’s life as well. She was indeed a blessing to everyone who knew her and to the children, teachers and parents she worked with in her professional life. I will miss her terribly, no doubt. Bertha was smart, super intelligent, kind and caring. She was just beautiful, delightful and lived a life that was inspiring. I have so many fond memories to cherish. I thank God for the life of Bertha King, who was truly an angel! To Calvin, Amber, Brooke, and the entire family, you have my sincere and deepest sympathy. Praying for your strength, comfort, and for God’s love to surround you today.

We are so saddened by the loss of your wife. It seems like just yesterday, even though it was in May, when the 2 of you were here in Robbins, IL. We’re so happy that Bertha could come to the Martin home and see the place where you grew up for 4 years; just after high school, and before enlisting in the military.
We love you Calvin, and because she was a part of you, we loved Bertha also.
For you, your daughters, and sons-in law, we pray that God will build you up where you are torn down, and strengthen you where you are weak.

    much love,
Deacon Martin, Mother Martin, Donald, Beverly, Carolyn, Otilla, and Angie.

  28. To the King family, I offer condolences and prayers of peace and comfort on the passing of my beautiful friend Bertha. I still think fondly of our times together at High Hills Elementary School. On Thanksgiving Day, I found the handwritten recipe she gave me, and I used it to bake for my family. The sweetest, kindest soul with an infectious laugh and indelible love for the children she worked with, I will always treasure the times we shared.

  33. To the family, I offer my sincere condolences. Bertha and I met at Mississippi University for Women when we were pursuing our degrees in Speech-Language Pathology. We later became military wives and lived near one another on Columbus Air Force Base in MS. We would often visit, laugh, and have delightful conversations. She even provided the middle name for my first child. Bertha was beautiful in appearance and had such a sweet spirit that I will always remember.

  34. We are deeply saddened to hear of Bertha’s transition. Our memories of her for over 25 years are beautiful, kind, loving, and compassionate. In my working relationship, she was the absolute best, her passion for our families far exceeded expectations. “BK” as I called her, we were the King and Queen on the hill while working at HHE, and for the remainder years in the district, we were not only colleagues, but friends. Her love for my family is unforgettable. I will miss her smile and our conversations. Praying for comfort and peace. Rest in peace my friend. 38. To the Family,

At some point during the 11 years I worked with Mrs, King at High Hills Elementary School, I had the opportunity to meet you all. She loved and talked about her girls and husband often. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful soul with me (and my husband- whom she got to meet and left a heart-warming impression, whenever she saw him). We will miss seeing her on her walks in the neighborhood but will cherish the joy she brought to our life just by her presence and conversations. Our pray is that the Peace of God will surround you now and always!

  42. Bertha and I were freshmen together in 1977 and line sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in the Fall of 1979 on the campus of Jackson State University. We later lived in the same city, as newly weds, in Columbus, MS following college and career moves in 1983. Bertha was always smart, witty, intelligent, and beautiful. She gave me a wonderful baby shower in Columbus while carrying our first child, Brittney. Bertha and I remained in contact over the years. My prayer is that the Lord will strengthen, comfort, and bring peace during this time of significant loss to Calvin, Amber, Brooke, and her family and friends now and forever more.
