  13. Dear Members of the family of Gertrude Murray.

I am so sorry for the loss of the life of this remarkable woman. I met Mrs. Murray, always Mrs. Murray to me, in the 1990s when I worked at Historic Columbia Foundation and the Wisteria Garden Club met at the Mann-Simons Cottage. A Northern transplant married to a Columbia native, I learned about Southern flowers and gardens from Mrs, Murray, who became my mentor. Under her tutelage as a willing student, I won many ribbons at garden club flower shows.

Years laters she introduced me to her husband Julius, and together they asked me to write a successful nomination of the Carver Theatre to the National Register of Historic Places. I happily undertook the project, an early effort to document black history in Columbia, South Carolina. Years later when Gertrude and Julius sold the Carver Theatre to Allen University, they surprised me with a check for my work!

Mrs. Murray has been a potent influence on my life, and I regret that I shall now have only the memory and the inspiration of it.

With great affection and a profound sense of loss,
    Regina Monteith

May you be strengthened and encouraged in the words of Acts 24:15 which assures us that love ones fallen asleep in death will be remembered in the resurrection. 20. Mrs. Murry and the late Julius Murray dedicated their lives to serving their community. I am honored to have known them and made welcome to their home when I was a student at Dreher High School. To JJ Sharon, Paul and the family my family and I want you to know that Mr. & Mrs. Murray represents the best in mankind by dedicating their lives to helping others. There is no greater honor than to leave this world by having made it better for those in need. We love you and our prayer is for you the family, to honor their memory by continuing to love and help others as they did. May God bless you and comfort you knowing our Redeemer lives!
