  2. First, my prayers goes out to Doretha’s son who was the Caregiver to his mother and to the entire Bull family and all of us who grieve this great loss.
I Just found out on May 24th that Queen Mother, Sister, Friend and Mentor went back to God. My grief was overwhelming as I read the newspaper… She was there for me in the mid 90s and when I moved back to Columbia area in 2014 God allowed us to reconnect. I wanted to show her the love back that she showed me years ago by being there for her like she showed to me and so many others. Her authentic Love was contagious. She will never be forgotten. Rest In Peace and Much Love!!!

  3. Queen Mother Doretha Bull is a Warrior for Afrikan people. She has fought the good fight. Now as an Enlightened Ancestor, she can take the most powerful position and do the work of Afrikan liberation from the Celestial places. The starry places were there is no death but eternal life.
My second home was always in her store. Nearly half of the many books on Afrikan people that I possess were purchased from her store.
We must continue her work and not allow This library to burn down.

  8. We used to be neighbors, such a giving, gifted & hard working person. Before she started her bookstore, she had a huge collection in her home (almost like a library), she would contribute books to my children & I. She was a pillar in the community I can see. I moved out of state, so I didnt remain in touch, regretfully. Rest well in the Heavens Mrs. Bull!

  9. Doretha will be dearly missed. She was a great historian and a wonderful scholar of African American Heritage as well as many traditions. She instilled many of those traditions in my family. I will honor your African American Heritage as long as I live.

Rest In Peace and I love you until we meet again.

    Your sister-in-law,

    Michelle Austin

  12. Dear Family:
Having known Doretha from childhood at church & through school at the Historic Booker T.. Washington High School , In this community, many knew her as an African American History scholar & a business woman from way back.
She played an integral role in keeping the community educated & informed about matters of our history in particular.
Many who knew her will miss her dedication to keeping it going inspite of the odds.
May she rest from her labor in peace & power!

  13. If you wanted to find someone who was committed to the uplift of her people, there was Doretha. If you wanted to talk to someone who had ideas and strategies for improving her community, there was Doretha. She was an organizer, an activist, a candidate for elected office, and a businesswoman. Thank you Doretha for all you gave to your community. You will always be a shining example of outspoken, uncompromising leadership, as well as friendship.

  14. My condolences and prayers to the family of Ms. Doretha, as I called her. As a young Black man growing up in Columbia, SC trying to search for my past history, her bookstore (Doretha’s Bookstore) was one of several premiere Black owned bookstores in Columbia. She was always resourceful in finding the latest important books to read, cutting edge scholars and lecturers educating the African community in Columbia on many topics.

She truly embodied the spirit of Sankofa – “go back and get your history, in order to straighten your future.”

    Never forgotten!
    Thank you.
