Extracted from the book titled” 100 Sergeants Major of Color” James Michael Lyles, USASMA Class 7 was born on November 14, 1939. He enlisted in the United States Army and quickly became one of the most renowned command sergeants major of his time. In his rise from private to command sergeant major he served in a variety of units, all with distinction. He has served as Command Sergeant Major for several different units including service with the 1st Battalion, 44th Air Defense Artillery. His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal and numerous foreign and service awards. On July 27, 2019, God called him and he was summoned home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We believe our Lord said, come my son, you have served your country well and now it is time to rest because I have something else for you to do. He was buried with full military honors in the Fort Jackson National Cemetery on Fort Jackson, South Carolina.
