Ms. Joanne LaVerne Tyler Tate

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joanne L. Tate on February 17, 2025. Joanne was born in Chicago on August 13, 1941, and grew up in Arkansas, Kansas, and California. She was the beloved eldest daughter of the late Gertrude and Daniel Tyler.
Joanne attended high school in Berkeley, CA, and Monrovia, Liberia, and earned her undergraduate degree from Talladega College in Alabama. She was actively involved in the civil rights movement during college, demonstrating her commitment to social justice and equality. Her career included positions with the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and the US National Labor Relations Board.
Joanne was united in marriage with Charles Tate, with whom she shared a loving family and raised two children. She dedicated herself to the Christian principles of loving God and treating others as she would want to be treated, and her faith guided her actions. Joanne will be remembered not only for her achievements but also for the love, kindness, and compassionate spirit she shared with all who knew her. Joanne is survived by her daughter; son, Eric; brother, Daniel; and grandchildren,
Quincy, Meena, Simone, and Coretta.
Joanne, I will always think of you when I see bright beautiful colors together. 💛💙🧡♥️💜
I met JoAnne at our church choir. We both sang in the choir. I would pick up every Sunday morning for us to go and rehearse before the church started. I did this for many years and my husband sat in the pew in the church but not in the choir. Then one day I went to a doctor out of town. I did this every two weeks and one day everything went wrong. While the doctor was working on my voice, I suddenly couldn’t breath, then the doctor had to stop. I loss my voice and this day Ibstill can’t sing anymore likewise once did. I miss singing and missed Ms. JoAnn Tate in the choir but I would go to see her and I am so glad that we became friends and would talk to her and her daughter. I had been trying to reach her for years since she moved away. I think I spoke to someone recently who has old telephone number. She was a caring and wonderful person. I am so sorry for the family’s loss but I know it will brighten the people in our choir and all she knew in the church. I am so sorry to hear of her passing but she is in heaven with all her parents and other people and with our Heavenly Father. We all will miss you but so glad your service is at St. John’s tomorrow. May you rest in peace my sweet friend. Janice and Joe Fort.
I was Mrs. Tate’s home health physical therapist in 2016. She was the kindest and sweetest patient who left such an impression on me. Even after she was no longer my patient, she would regularly call me on every holiday to wish me a happy celebration since she knew how much I enjoyed the holidays. Her loving spirit has touched so many lives and has left its mark even years later. I send all my condolences to her friends and family mourning the loss of such a beautiful individual.
Enjoyed my time with JoAnne with the St. John’ Chancel Choir. May God’s blessings be with her family during this tough time.
Sending warm wishes to the family. Joanne will live in our hearts forever. She was loved by all who knew her and will be remembered as a woman of grace, charm and fortitude. Rest in Peace, my dear cousin.
I was so sorry to hear of Joanne’s passing. In Cincinnati we were each other’s family. When she moved to the Chicago area we again were family. Haven’t seen her for 5-6 years. My friend I love you. Rest in peace.
We are deeply sorry for your loss. Praying for your strength and comfort.

Like the sunrise that comes each morning,
dispelling the darkness and warming our lives,
